Malstrom EOD Unit called in to dispose of old chemicals from the Chemistry Storage room at CHS

April 26, 2017

The Malstrom EOD (Explosive Ordinance Division) was in the Chinook High School on Wednesday, April 12th to dispose of some volatile chemicals that had been sitting in the Chemistry storage room for many years. Picric acid and ethyl ether were the two containers taken away.

The high school was evacuated prior to handling the chemicals. At which time, the chemicals were transported outside of town, where they were then buried, and then exploded by the EOD unit.

The school is in the process of eliminating chemicals that are no longer allowed in high school and/or college chemistry departments. There are other chemicals that will be removed from the lab via an outside agency and shipped to a location where they will be disposed of properly.

The two chemicals taken out by the Malstrom crew were considered dangerous enough that they needed to be disposed of in this particular manner.

Chinook High School would like to commend the efforts of Malstrom Air Force Base for allowing their EOD unit to come and dispose of these chemicals on a moment’s notice free of charge.

Malstrom was contacted Wednesday morning and they were at the school by 3:30 p.m. in the afternoon to dispose of the chemicals.

The Chinook High School students and staff are very appreciative of the efforts of our Volunteer Fire Crew, EMT, City police, and Sherriff’s department for assisting us so quickly in an effort to resolve a potential dangerous situation
