American Lutheran "celebrated" volunteers

Dr. Gale Jellum and Karen Covert make a decision during the Chinook American Lutheran Church's Volunteer Recognition Day held recently. The drop-in reception was to 'celebrate' volunteers and the role they play in "keeping our community going." The Stonebroke String Band provided background music and church members supplied pie and ice cream.

The American Lutheran Church in Chinook hosted a celebration to recognize the role of volunteers in the local community. Kayla Hudon was responsible for organizing the event and explained, "It's part of "God's Work, Our Hands," a program encouraged by our synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)." It's the second similar recognition hosted by the Chinook church. In 2016 the event specifically recognized volunteers who provide emergency medical services in the area.

Hudon said, "This year we wanted to recognize all volunteers in our community. The event was meant to be informal, so people could just drop in, enjoy some pie and ice cream and visit." The Stonebroke String Band provided background music. Church members had baked 23 pies and cakes, all cut and displayed for guests' enjoyment.

Members at American Lutheran plan to continue the annual recognition. Hudon said, "It's a way we can let volunteers in the community know they are appreciated, a way to celebrate the role they play in keeping our communities going."
