The Blaine County Extension Office and CHS Big Sky will be hosting a crop seminar at the Chinook Eagles Club from 5:30 pm – 9:00 pm. Three Montana State University faculty will be on hand to provide crop information. The program will be worth 3 recertification credits for private pesticide holders.

The workshop will begin at 5:30 pm with a pulled pork dinner sponsored by CHS Big Sky.

At 6:00 pm, Dr. Alan Dyer, Montana State University Pathologist will present “Management Root Health In a Complex World”. Healthy roots are vital to maximizing yields, particularly in a dry year. Unfortunately, with a complex of pathogens and parasites attacking roots, the path to health is a convoluted one. This presentation will touch on how seed treatments, seeding practices, and rotations combine to affect root health and crop performance; and will discuss disease management tools in development for the future.

Dr. Tim Seipel, Montana State University Extension Crop Weed Specialist will discuss herbicide carryover and symptoms of crop injury. He will also discuss how the environment affects herbicide half-life at 7:00 to 8:00 PM.

At 8:00 pm, Dr. Kent McVay, Montana State University Extension Agronomist, will be discussing the reasons why Montana stands out from the rest of the country in percentage of no-till acres. Also, McVay will discuss results from a 6-year rotation study conducted at Huntley showing options for crop rotations with wheat as well as the first year’s results of a pulse crop study that looked at water use efficiency. He will update growers on some work done at Southern Ag Research Center by the weed scientist on herbicide resistance management. McVay will conclude with some of the results on grain crop response to additions of zinc.

We are offering a free dinner sponsored by CHS Big Sky so please register by November 15th if you plan on attending by calling the Extension Office at 406-357-3200.
