Sugarbeeter, Wildcat wrestlers headed to Northern B/C Divisional in Cut Bank

January 30, 2019

Harlem senior Moses Smith looks to control his opponent Saturday at the Malta Invitational wrestling tournament.

The time has come, the post season is here and the Chinook Sugarbeeters and Harlem Wildcats are ready. The teams will fine tune things this week in practice as they prepare for the Northern B/C Divisional in Cut Bank on Saturday.

The 'Beeters and Wildcats closed out the regular season in Malta on Saturday and performed well.

Chinook junior JT Hauer finished third at 152 pounds for the 'Beeters. Sophomore Favion Couturier also picked up a third place finish for Chinook at 160 pounds.

Chinook sent six wrestlers to Malta on Saturday and the Wildcats five.

Hauer has had a fine season and turned in another solid effort on Saturday.

He began the day with quarterfinal win over Colton Barsness of Cut Bank by decision, 7-2. Hauer then lost his semifinal match but bounced right back in the consolation rounds.

He defeated Caleb Neubauer of Poplar by pin (0:53) in the consolation semifinal. Hauer then won his third/fourth place match by a 2-0 decision over Kyler Hallock of Glasgow to finish third.

Couturier hasn't seen a lot of mat time this season, but has certainly made the most of it since his return last week.

After a second place finish in Harlem a week ago, Couturier added a third place finish in Malta to his season resume.

Favion won his opening match, a quarterfinal bout against Tommy Ehman of Choteau, by pinfall at 3:22. Couturier would lose his semifinal match and head to the consolation rounds.

Couturier pinned Sammy Bruneele of Poplar in the consolation semifinal and then Levi Beeler of Shepherd in the consolation final to finish third.

Senior Ross Reed won three matches on the day, defeating Jared Selander of Choteau by pin at 2:35. Raice Strand of Cut Bank in the consolation second round by pinfall (2:48) and Colt French of Malta, also by pin at 0:32 in the consolation quarterfinal.

Also picking up a win for the Sugarbeeters was freshman Drake Berreth at 120 pounds. Berreth pinned Conrad's Hunter Combs in the first round.

Freshman Ethan Liddle won his second round consolation match against Wolf Point's Cruise Montclair by pinfall.
