State Degree Winners. FFA Chapter Advisor Robin Allen poses with her students Cord Schneider, Ryle Elliot, Kendra McMaster, and Rachel Gunderson who earned the highest FFA degree in Montana.

The 89th Annual Montana FFA State Convention was held at Montana State University (MSU) in Bozeman on April 3-6, and several Chinook FFA Chapter members returned home with awards.

Kendra McMaster, Cord Schneider, Ryle Elliot, and Rachel Gunderson earned their State Degrees, the highest FFA degree in Montana. Elliot was also selected as the State Winner in the Ag Mechanics and Repair Maintenance proficiency and won the State Star in Ag Placement. Those accomplishments qualify Elliot for National FFA competition in Indianapolis, October 30-November 2.

In addition, Cord Schneider was recognized for his proficiency in Ag Service and Rachel Gunderson was recognized for her proficiency in beef production. Furthermore, Alyssa Grusize and Kurtis Hamilton completed the National Chapter Application for which Chinook received a bronze rating.

Four additional Chinook FFA members, Alyssa Gruszie, Jade Cecrle, Bree Swanson, and Morgan Friede received their scholarships at the donor scholarship dinner on April 5.

More than 2,000 high school and middle school FFA students took part in numerous competitive Career Development Events, leadership trainings, and local service projects in the Bozeman community, including projects at Habitat for Humanity, Eagle Mount, Heart of the Valley Animal Shelter, and the Gallatin Valley Food Bank.

Top Award Winner. Ryle Elliot accepts congratulations from National FFA President, Luke O'Leary. Selected as the State Winner in the Ag Mechanics and Repair Maintenance proficiency and as winner of the State Star in Ag Placement, Elliot will advance to Nationals.

On Day One of the Convention, several FFA members attended a workshop with National FFA President, Luke O'Leary. During the workshop, members learned about communication and conversation starters. Others competed in events like farm business management, agronomy, livestock evaluation, or ag mechanics. During down time during the three-day event, students ventured to the Career and Trade Show located in Shroyer Gym where more than 25 vendors had displays and students could explore career opportunities. Some of the booths were interactive, and convention goers completed the Trade Show Challenge for a chance to win prizes.

A Career and Industry Panel presented over lunch on Thursday, April 4 at the MSU Strand Union Building. The Career and Industry Panel, new to the FFA convention last year, is designed to forecast prospects for students in industries that may or may not be connected with agriculture. The annual FFA convention highlights the futures of the next generation and the partnerships that make opportunities for them possible.

According to Chinook FFA Chapter advisor, Robin Allen, as her members interacted with different chapters, took initiative in various contests, and set good examples for their peers, they not only learned important skills to bring home for implementation into their own chapter, they learned about building relationships, modeling expectations, and performing consistently. Allen expressed pride in her group's leadership and accomplishments.
