Meadowlark Elementary Celebrates I Love to Read Month

February 12, 2020

In honor of I Love to Read Month, Meadowlark Elementary will be celebrating the entire month of February with prizes for 80% or higher on Accelerated Reader tests as well as with a grand prize drawing at the end of the month. To further promote reading, students will be participating in other various activities.

The Accelerated Reader (AR) program is a computerized program that tests reading comprehension. Students select books at their reading level, read independently, and take an independent, computer-delivered comprehension test.

Every book on the AR BookFinder list has a point value. The number of points is based on a book’s length and difficulty. For example, a three-point book might be a short, somewhat easier choice. A ten-point book would be longer and more challenging. Students earn points when they take the quiz for each book and pass it with an 80% or better. Once a student accumulates 100 points, that individual earns a star. For every one hundred additional points earned, readers earn a rainbow. The AR program tracks their progress over the course of the school year.

Chinook Schools Librarian, Mrs. Kelsey Harry has organized a week of reading-themed dress up days and activities that are taking place this week. On Monday, February 10, students, staff, and faculty participated in Read My Shirt Day by wearing shirts with some kind of school appropriate writing on them.

Anyone visiting Meadowlark Elementary School on Tuesday would have wondered about the number of students packing flashlights. Tuesday was Shine a Light on Reading Day, and students celebrated by bringing flashlights to school in order to read in a blanket fort in the library.

Wednesday is Crazy About Reading Day, with many people wearing crazy socks or modelling crazy hair.

Tomorrow is Dress as Your Favorite Book Character, and on Friday everyone is invited to wear pink or red clothing to celebrate Valentine’s Day and I Love Reading Day.

In the grand prize drawing later this month, school officials will be selecting the names of seven winners who will receive one of seven Kindle Fires for their reading achievement. The Kindle Fire is a media tablet that houses all of the owner’s media—from books and games to music and movies. These prizes have been generously donated by the Chinook’s Masonic Lodge, which sponsors reading achievement with its Kindles for Books Program.
