September 2, 2020

The Chinook Sugarbeeters got the 2020 Volleyball season started on the right foot Thursday night in Big Sandy. The Sugarbeeters began the season with a 3-0 sweep of the Big Sandy Pioneers in a District 6C contest. The Sugarbeeters added their second conference win of the season on Saturday when they swept the Centerville Miners 3-0.

The Chinook Sugarbeeter Volleyball began their 2020 season this past week with a pair of matches against District 6C opponents.

Thursday the team was in Big Sandy to face a familiar conference foe the Pioneers. Chinook was dominate, sweeping the season opener 3-0. Two nights later the 'Beeters made their home debut in a conference clash against the Centerville Miners, again winning in straight sets.

The Northern C Division for volleyball was realigned this past season from three districts with six, seven and eight teams in each to two nine team districts, the 6C and 7C. The District 6C-East that for years featured the Sugarbeeters, Hays/Lodge Pole, Box Elder, Big Sandy, North Star and Chester/Joplin-Inverness remains in tack and added Fort Benton, Centerville and Geraldine/Highwood to the conference schedule.

The Sugarbeeters have been a power house in their district since moving to Class C in 2005. Chinook always seems to be in the hunt for a district/conference championship while also competing well at the Northern C Divisional.

The Sugarbeeters are obviously familiar with their conference opponents from the 6C-East and have faced the Fort Benton Longhorns in home and home contests for the past several years. Centerville and Geraldine/Highwood are less familiar as the teams have only squared off in regular season tournaments in the past.

To begin the 2020 season with a pair of conference wins is a huge boost moving forward.

Thursday in Big Sandy the Sugarbeeters started fast and never looked back. The girls won the opening set 25-15 to take an early lead in the contest. Chinook maintained control in the second set, winning 25-17. Looking for the sweep in set number three, the 'Beeters faced a bit tougher challenge but pulled out a 25-22 win to take the match 3-0.

Senior Delaney Kellam powered home 12 of the teams 27 kills in the win. Senior Ginger Hauer set the hitters up with a strong showing recording 19 of the teams 24 set assists in the win. The 'Beeters recorded 17 Aces in the match with seniors Lily Surber and Jayden Miller each serving up five. Surber also dug up a team high 10 balls on the night while Kellam collected four of the teams six blocks.

Saturday night in the Floyd Bowen Gymnasium the Sugarbeeters welcomed the Centerville Miners to town. Chinook again started fast and then kept getting stronger and stronger as the match wore on. Chinook won the first set 25-16, then took set number two 25-14 before finishing the Miners off with a 25-12 set win to earn the sweep.

Kellam again led the team with six kills while Hauer tallied nine assists. Miller led the team with four Aces, senior Hailey Bell dug up five balls and sophomore Bree Swanson stated a pair of blocks.
