Construction Update and Go Orange Day

May 5, 2021

On Wednesday, April 28, which the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) had designated as Go Orange Day, traffic moved at a crawl on a stretch of Highway 2 just east of Zurich where MDT crews worked.

A road patrol, bulldozer, and excavator, as well as a number of smaller construction machines and trucks, labored at the culvert excavation site near mile post 413.4. The work zone was controlled with signal lights and by pilot car, with a posted speed limit of 35 mph. To allow the contractor to work safely, traffic shifted to the south onto a temporary dirt and gravel surface. This detour had a width restriction of 12' for single lane traffic from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday (4/28).

According to the MDT, that restriction would continue through Tuesday, May 4. The roadway will be open to 24' two-way traffic outside of these times, all day Friday-Sunday, and after May 4.

Two excavators were also operating on Wednesday near mile post 423 where sections of precast concrete box culvert had been set by crane on Monday and were being buried. A pilot car led vehicles on a one-lane detour. Another excavator was operating just east of Dancing Moon Lane, where motorists saw a speed restriction. However, both lanes were open in that location.

During the first week in May, weather permitting, the MDT plans to begin paving operations in the area.

The MDT encouraged the wearing of orange on April 28 to show support for safe work zones. They invited people to share photos on social media using the hashtags #MontanaGoesOrange and #GoOrangeDay.

Although some reconstruction activities were occurring approximately nine miles east of Havre to Chinook, the work was taking place off the roadway with no effect to the traffic last week.
