Area Schools Name Boys and Girls State Delegates

June 2, 2021

Boys State Delegates from Harlem, Darrius LongKnife and Titan Brockie will travel to the state's capital on Sunday to learn first-hand about governmental operations.

Four students from Chinook High School and two from Harlem High School have been selected to attend the 2021 sessions of Montana Boys State and Montana American Legion Auxiliary Girls State. Liam Edwards, Braden Eoff, Anna Morrow, and Kinley Roberts-Hamilton from Chinook and Titan Brockie and Darrius LongKnife from Harlem will join other juniors from across the state at Carroll College in Helena, Montana, in early June.

American Legion Posts sponsor high school juniors to attend the two programs, with Blaine Post 48 paying expenses associated with Boys State and Blaine Unit 48 Auxiliary paying sponsorship fees for area Girls State delegates. Commander of the Post and Chairman of the Montana American Legion Boys State program is Lowell Long.

American Legion Boys State is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for high school students. It is a participatory program where each student becomes part of the operation of his local city, county, and state government.

The program will take place from June 6-11. Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, band and chorus, as well as various recreational programs.

Boys State Delegates from Chinook, Liam Edwards and Braden Eoff will soon be departing for Helena.

Then, from Sunday, June 13 through Saturday, June 19 the girls will take their turn on campus. Since the inception of the Girls State program in 1937, nearly one million young people have had the opportunity to learn first-hand how their local governments work.

Delegates also learn how to participate in the functioning of their state's government in preparation for their future roles as responsible, informed citizens. A capable staff will guide the delegates through the levels of local, county and state government, a mock court, and much more during their stay at Carroll College.

Although the two programs differ slightly, both have the goal of helping to educate young people about their responsibilities as U.S. citizens. Those who attend often refer to the experience as life-changing in how it deepened their understanding of a citizen's rights, privileges, and responsibilities. Among famous Boys and Girls State alumni are Michael Jordan, Neil Armstrong, Tom Brokaw, Garth Brooks, and Jane Pauley.
