Car Show Returns to Turner

July 7, 2021

On Saturday, July 17, everyone is invited to the Turner Car Show. This community event is sponsored by Big Flat Grocery.

Cars, motorcycles, tractors, and airplanes are all welcome to fly or drive in for what event organizers are calling "a day of fun." Registration for all vehicles begins at 10:00 a.m.

Although Turner has held car shows in the past, it has been a few years since the community has hosted such an event. Chet Fouts, who is on the Board of Directors for the Big Flat Grocery, reported that this is the first car show for the store.

"The bar used to sponsor a car show, but it has been about four years since they quit doing it. This is more of a customer appreciation event and to get something going in the community," Fouts explained.

There won't be any prizes, according to Fouts, who said the focus is about the fun of attending, showing the cars or vehicles, and getting to talk about them.

According to another event organizer, Alan Van Voast, there will be a fly-in and a Lions Pancake Breakfast from 7:00-9:00 a.m. Many of the airplanes will actually land on Turner's main street and remain parked there during the show.

Throughout the day, concessions will be served at the festivities. A free-will donation will be accepted for the hamburgers, chips, and soda pop offered. An onsite beer garden will also sell beverages.

Another attraction, cornhole games will take place. For those unfamiliar with the game, cornhole has been called many things, including Corn Toss, Tailgate Toss, Norwegian Horseshoes, or simply Bags. Some claim that the game originated in Germany in the 14th century, others credit the Blackhawk Tribe of Illinois, and some point to a Kentucky farmer in the 1800s.

Whatever its origins, the game cornhole is a pastime of many and is played in backyards, on beaches, at breweries, on college campuses, and among those who camp or host tailgate gatherings across the United States. In 2011, the New York Times declared that "the Midwest's favorite game is sweeping the Northeast."

Cornhole is a lawn game in in which players take turns throwing 16-ounce cloth bags-typically filled with corn but sometimes filled with other grains, beans, or even sand-at a raised platform with a hole in the far end. The platforms measure 4'x2' and are generally made of wood. The surface sits twelve inches high off the ground in the back and four inches high in the front. Boards-which are frequently decorated with sports team designs, college insignias, family names/crests, livestock brands, patriotic themes, or even business logos-are positioned approximately 24 feet apart for casual play. In tournament or league play, boards are placed 27 feet from front edge to front edge.

A bag in the hole scores three points, while one on the platform scores one point. Play continues until a player reaches the score of 21. The game can be played as either doubles or singles and uses two boards with eight bags (four of one color and four of another).

Fouts stated that there would be no formal prizes for cornhole, either. There will be four or five boards set up, and if people wish to organize some kind of a tournament, with winners challenging one another, that competition will be supported.

About the Turner Car Show, one member of the Blaine County Cruisers said, "It's always a good show up North."
