Harlem, HLP and Turner Notch Key Basketball Wins

Another week of high school basketball in the Hi-Line area is now history.

And it was a busy one for many area squads.

Harlem was in action last Thursday as the Wildcats played girls and boys games against Box Elder.

Harlem got right back to its winning ways on Friday night as the Wildcats took down District 2B rival Wolf Point, 70-53. The game was close until the Wildcats outscored the Wolves 15-3 in the final eight minutes to grab the conference win.

Harlem is now 5-1 overall this season.

The Harlem girls put up a great fight against the Bears, but, they fell short, 68-59. The Wildcats got close with a 19-16 third quarter, but ultimately, the Bears pulled away in the fourth. Martay Stiffarm Rosette scored 22 points and Sharice Raining Bird added 16 in the tough loss.

Harlem quickly bounced back however. On Friday night, the Wildcats edged arch rival Wolf Point, 40-32 for a District 2B victory. After a low-scoring first half, Harlem outscored the Wolves 29-22 in the second to earn the win.

Kashlyn Speak Thunder led all scorers for Harlem with nine points.

The Harlem boys and girls return to the Harlem High gymnasium this Friday when they host Fairview in a doubleheader.

Last weekend also saw the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds battle Big Sandy in a District 9C showdown.

The HLP girls opened the night with a big conference win over the Pioneers, 56-34. The T-Birds closed out what was a close game with a 20-2 run in the fourth quarter to earn the win in the Thunderdome.

Kelcie Mount scored 17 points for the T-Birds, who also beat Frazer last Friday, as they improved to an impressive 7-1 on the season.

In the boys game, the Pioneers were just too much for the T-Birds, as the Pioneers won 74-52. HLP kept it close, trailing just 13-11 after the first quarter, but a 25-11 run by Big Sandy in the second stanza put the T-Birds too far behind.

Jacob Grandes led three T-Birds in double figures with 18 points, while Roan Ereaux and Aidyn Hawankorn each scored 13.

The HLP boys and girls will be back in action when they travel to North Star for a 9C doubleheader this Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Turner boys and girls had just one game on the slate last week, and that was a huge 9C battle with the Box Elder Bears.

And in the girls game, the Tornadoes pulled off a big 50-49 victory over the Bears. The game was very close throughout, but, the Tornadoes were able to hold off the Bears in the final second to earn a crucial District 9C win.

Bridget Reed scored 20 points in the win for Turner, while Natalie Richman chipped in with 13.

The Turner boys and girls will be right back on the floor this Friday when the Tornadoes host North Star. Turner then travels to Big Sandy on Saturday.
