Turner girls are 9C champs!

Box Elder boys win 9C title

The Turner Tornadoes can now call themselves District 9C champions. That's because last Saturday night in Havre, the Tornadoes took care of business.

In the District 9C girls championship game, Turner beat Box Elder 47-27 to capture the 9C championship and advance to this weekend's Northern C Divisional Tournament.

The Tornadoes came to Havre as the No. 1 seed in the girls tournament, and after a bye in the first round, they dominated rival Hays-Lodge Pole 53-36 in the semifinals last Friday. That win pushed the Tornadoes into the championship game, where they were again unstoppable.

Turner will bring a 15-4 overall record into the first round of the Northern C today, where the Tornadoes will play Power-Dutton-Brady. The championship Tornadoes are made up of Natalie Richman, Abby Grabofsky, Ali Doyle, Rosie Day, Bridget Reed, Isabella Van Voast, Holly Grabofsky, Olivia Perez, Harley Beck, Piper Fox, Gracie Zellmer, and Hannah Van Voast. Coaches Darci Ammen and Julie Welsh led the Tornadoes to the championship.

North Star will also join Turner and Big Sandy at the Northern C girls tournament after the Knights finished third in Havre. North Star knocked out Hays-Lodge Pole in Saturday's consolation game, 44-34. The Thunderbirds wound up finishing fourth with a 1-2 record at the 9C, seeing their season come to an end.

In the boys 9C tournament, Box Elder downed Big Sandy 67-39 in the championship game. The Bears beat HLP 86-29 in the semifinals, while Big Sandy took down North Star in the other semifinal, 55-51.

The championship Bears were composed of Walter Wolf Chief, Austin Bacon, Ashtin LaMere, Braydon Wolf Chief, Timothy Rosette, Kdenny Hagelson, Jaden Nault, Noah MacDonald, Santana Wells Jr., and Landon Jilot. It was yet another 9C title for head coach Jeremy MacDonald.
