We've Got The County Covered

Earl Lathan Johnston

Earl Lathan Johnston passed on May 12, 2026 as a spiritual "calling" to be reunited with his mother in heaven. He was at Northern MT Care Center, where he had been for over 6 years. He endured the heartfelt loss of his mother and sister there also. Earl's journey on this Earth began on August 11, 1945, in the charming town of Havre, Montana, and it was there that his life's story unfolded over the course 80 years.

Born to Earl and Grace (Tooley) Johnston, Earl was a cherished son who carried forward the values of kindness, integrity, and a deep sense of community and pride for veterans and the country. Earl's upbringing in Havre shaped him into the remarkable man he became, known for his unwavering dedication to family and many friends. He had steadfast care of his dear mother Grace "the Golden Girl" Heeter until her passing at age 101.

Though Earl's marriage in 1975 to his former spouse, Karen Coon ended, it was marked by shared memories and blessed with the arrival of Krytyna Lynn. His life was enriched by the presence of his daughter, who resided in Havre in the later years of his life. She was the light of Earl's life and blessed for her love and support when he became more disabled and unable to walk.

Throughout his life, Earl believed in the power of the Holy Spirit which lead his life with faith and humble grace. Earl was a beloved member of the Havre community. His warm smile and friendly demeanor were a welcome presence to friends and strangers alike and had an innate ability to find common ground. He was was known as the Roadman as he walked many miles on the streets of Havre.

Earl's love for nature was evident in his frequent walks through the Montana countryside, where he found solace and inspiration amidst the beauty of the natural world. He had the ability to find joy in the simple pleasures with many friends. He was often found ringing the bell for the Salvation Army in the bitter cold of winter. He had great pride and respect for Veterans and this country and was a helpful hand with the Shriners.

Earl is survived by daughter Krystyna Nerling, nieces: Linda Myrum and Yvonne Temple. Nephews: David and Gerald Myrum, Harold LaRocque.

As we bid farewell to Earl, we take comfort in knowing that he has been reunited with his parents, Earl and Grace, as well as sisters Shirley (Myrum) Tautges and Margaret LaRocque in a place of eternal peace.

Earl's gentle spirit, smile, sense of humor, and enduring kindness will forever be cherished by those fortunate enough to have crossed or walked on his life's path.

A Service will be held at a later date.

Arrangements and cremation are entrusted to Wilderness Funeral Homes.
