The Grain Growers Club at Turner Public School traveled to Harlem on March 4 to see the small-scale version of what was to come in Portland. The Chinook Junior High Academic Olympic Team made their community proud this week, capturing 1st place in the oral competition at the regional Academic Olympics. In March, Holly Grabofsky, a sophomore at Turner Public School, entered Reach Higher Montana's Design a Sticker, Win a Scholarship competition. Jake Etchart spent his summers at Fort Peck Lake, where he was often found at the Fort Peck Theatre, a place close to his heart. His family actively volunteered with the theatre, and Jake especially enjoyed watching his sisters, Alexa and Christen, perform on stage. In Jake’s memory, his family and friends established a theatre scholarship fund, which is now part of the Fort Peck Theatre Preservation Endowment through the Montana Community Foundation. Hello From the Chinook Senior Center We have certainly had our share of sadness over the past couple of weeks. First we lost Virginia Olson and then, Mary Pyette. These two lovely ladies have been brightening up our Center for many, many years. We are fortunate enough to have photos galore, due to the tenacity of Mary Pyette. Our dear Mary Pyette died peacefully April 2, 2025. Mary was born to Greek immigrants George and Ageliki Pappas on May 19,1933 in Havre, MT. As a child she attended the "Pride of the Prairie" country school south of Gildford, Montana. As a reserved child, her first-grade teacher informed her mother that she would be held back if she did not begin to speak. Consequently, she started speaking and never stopped. It is with great sadness that the family of Clark A. Jorns announces his passing on March 24, 2025. in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was 84 years old and lived a full and accomplished life. He was born on February 5, 1941, in Havre, Montana, and raised in Chinook. He attended Chinook High School. Clark was involved in 15 different businesses. On Friday, April 4th, the Northern Lights Athletic Scholarship Foundation (NLASF) hosted the 20th annual Spring Fling dinner and auction in the Armory Gymnasium. One of the highlights of the evening was Coach Chris Mouat being presented with his 20-year maroon jacket (congratulations Coach).
