Plans for Chinook's annual Community Thanksgiving dinner are well underway. The yearly event, dating back to the 1980s, has become a part of the holiday tradition for both locals and visitors. The original purpose for the annual feast was to provide a way for families to be able to gather and celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving dinner together. Concerns about having space to prepare a huge meal, hosting a large family gathering or funding such a get-together prohibited some families from...

In November 1991, Darlene Sharp, then a resident of Havre, won a nearly $47 million jackpot in a Lotto America drawing. At the time, Sharp credited Slammer the bull for her win since two of the six numbers she played twice a week for two years could be traced back to Slammer: 1, 9, 15, 17, 34, and 52. Slammer was the only bull in the Sharp’s small herd, hence the number 1, and his ear tag was number 52. But really, Sharp had the whole herd to thank since her other numbers all related back to them. She selected 9 from the ear tag of Scrubby t...

You know, Lord, it was fun to listen to friends share about their children. One gal, ‘J. C. ‘, shared that her little girl loved trees and leaves and flowers and would pause, occasionally, and look to heaven and thank the Lord for the beauty. ‘J.C.’ said that once she heard her daughter, while she was kneeling and looking up into the trees: “Lord, Grandma said that YOU have said, about 30 or more times in the Bible, that YOU know or count the hairs on our heads, that You know their number. So, Father God, I’m just asking, do You also know h...

The Chinook Sugarbeeters are heading back to the Class C football playoffs. While the Beeters already had a strong season and were locked into a playoff berth prior to last Friday night's regular season finale with Simms, they certainly wanted to end that regular season on a high note. And Chinook did just that with a 74-0 win over the Tigers. The win also came on senior night for Chinook and head coach Mike Jones. The Beeters definitely went out in style at Hoon Field with the shutout victory,...
I think we need to send Special and ongoing “thank you’s” to Theresa, Ritch, and multiple volunteers who have filled church pulpits each week in Chinook and surrounding areas. Some, like Theresa, zipping from one church to another all day Sunday! It is unfortunate that many small town churches have lacked pastors for so long; however, I am thinking we are missing the boat somewhat in that Jesus Himself taught His Disciples more directly. Take Ephesians 4 for example. The message was to the “disciples” in Ephesus which can really be interpret...

The announcement that after 127 years of service the Jesuits would be leaving St. Paul Mission was a shocking surprise to the congregation of the church in Hays. Church officials said the reason was the retirements of many older priests and a shortage of new priests entering the ministry. Father Retzel, who has headed the Mission staff for many years and was retiring said though saddened the members of the church seemed to be accepting the changes. Two Sundays ago the St. Paul Mission...
