I received a letter from a lady describing herself as "an of town subscriber" to the Journal. JoAnn (Staff) Stevenson is a Chinook High grad (class of 1959) who grew up on the Staff Ranch south and west of Chinook in the area where Logie, Staff and Clear Creek roads intersect. The Staff family owns the ranch which is operated by Harry Ramberg, a second-generation cousin of JoAnn's grandfather John Staff. The Chinook community hosted the Red Cross blood drive on Tuesday, July 23rd. We had 45 donors presenting. Great job everyone. We had 2 first time donors: Tayla Richman and Debbie Munari. We hope this was the first of many donations for both of you. The canteen was hosted by the Presybyterian & Zion Lutheran Ladies. The hard work and time that goes into all the homemade sandwiches, snacks and sweet treats is always appreciated and enjoyed by all. Early in January of 2024, the Schellin Family approached the Friends of the Pool and Park Foundation to see if they could help fundraise for the Chinook Pool and Park Project. Just prior to that, the organization had learned the devastating news that they were not the recipients of a very large grant that they had applied for. Today, July 24, the Friends of the Harlem Public Library are hosting a community appreciation event. A free taco bar will be served at the library from 4:00-6:00 P.M. Summer Reading is drawing to a close. The final day for participants to bring in their reading logs to redeem minutes read for gift certificates is Friday, July 26. When Triangle Communications recently announced their 2024 High School and Undergraduate Scholarship Winners, six Blaine County youth were among the 27 award recipients. One of Montana State University's most prestigious scholarships, the Provost Scholar award, was given to two individuals from New Media's listening area. Quentin Edwards was named a Provost Scholar, and graduated from Chinook High School and plans to major in biomedical engineering and then attend medical school. The former Jumping Juniper Garden Club organization donated nearly $1200 of funds that they had raised over the years to the Friends of the Pool and Park Foundation for improvements to the Pool and Park. At the end of January Allyssa Schoen completed a semester as an exchange student in Japan. A junior education major at Montana State University-Bozeman, she left for the southernmost island in Japan early September 2023 and returned back to start spring quarter the end of January. Today we will be showing a movie at 3:00 p.m. instead of the usual Summer Reading Program. Thursday July 4th the library will be closed in observance of Independence Day. We will be open 12:00 to 5:00 Friday July 5th and we will have our yearbooks on display for reunion goers to stop in and view.
