The library will be closed Thanksgiving Day but will be open Friday, November 29. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
The seventh annual Holiday Wine & Cheese fundraiser is December 4 at 6 P.M. at the library. This is the major fundraiser event of the year sponsored by the Friends of the Harlem Library. There will be delicious food, silent and live auctions, door prizes, 50/50 raffle, wine and beer tasting, and just plain fun! Tickets for adults 21 and over are on sale at the library and will be available at the door for at a slightly higher price. Please call the library for more information.
The library will open from 10:00-1:00 December 4 to allow for set up of the Wine & Cheese fundraiser.
The Book Challenge for November is to read a book set in Montana. You may want to read one of the nominees for the Great Montana Read sponsored by Montana PBS. The nominees this year are nonfiction prose and are on display at the library. Voting for Montana’s favorite book ends November 29 at montanapbs.org/events/greatmontanaread/. Notify the library with the book you read for November’s challenge and your name will be entered to win a gift certificate from a local business. December’s challenge is to read your favorite book.
Carly will hold Storytime in Turner, Wednesday, December 4, 10 A.M. at the Turner Christian Church, weather permitting. This program is for infants and preschool children and their parents or caregivers.
The Book Club will not meet during the month of December.
Margaret Atwood has written “The Testaments,” sequel to “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Fifteen years after the events of “The Handmaid’s Tale” the regime of the Republic of Gilead still is in power but there are signs it is beginning to decay from within. Long-buried secrets bring together three radically different women. Each is forced to come to terms with who she is and how far she will go for what she believes.
Four women: Kate, Ginger, Lulu and Emily. They all confess to the same murder. Why? Only they know and they are not telling. Don’t miss “Pretty Guilty Women” by Gina Lamanna.
Two books have been given in memory of Marvin L. Brommer. “This Blessed Earth: A Year in the Life of an American Family Farm” by Ted Genoways and “Growing a Revolution: Bringing Our Soil Back to Life” by David R. Montgomery.
“The Fifth Column” is by Andrew Gross. In February 1939 Europe is on the brink of war. In New York City Charles Mossman is drowning his sorrows after the loss of his job and his marriage when a group a Nazi supporters draped in swastika flags barge into the bar. Charlie takes a swing with tragic results. Two years later Charlie’s estranged wife and daughter live across from a kindly Swiss couple. But Charles suspects they might not be who they say they are. When Pearl Harbor is attacked Charles suspicions turn to reality with Emma an innocent pawn.
Other new titles include “Less” by Andrew Sean Greer, “Lady in the Lake” by Laura Lippman, and “Killer Instinct” by James Patterson.
Storytime for infants through preschool children and their parents/caregivers meets on Tuesday at 10 A.M. After School Squad for elementary students is held on Wednesdays at 3:30. Lego Club for all ages meets on Thursdays at 4:30.
Bob Quinn, Big Sandy, presented a program on organic and sustainable agriculture at the Harlem Library November 19. His family business is Montana Flour & Grain which markets Kamut Khorasan wheat products. Bob also formed WindPark Solutions which was responsible for the development of Montana’s first large scale wind farm. He is the co-author of the book “Grain by Grain: A Quest to Revive Ancient Wheat, Rural Jobs and Healthy Food.”
