The newest novel by Montana author Gwen Florio is “The Truth of it All.” Julia Geary’s life is full of resentment. Her husband was killed while serving in Iraq. She is a single mother in a low-paying job. She shares a home with her over-bearing mother-in-law. As a public defender she longs for a breakout case. Julia is called to represent Iraqi refugee Sami Mohammed who is accused of assaulting a girl in a locker room. In a town full of animosity against refugees things turn ugly when Julia and her family receive threats and Sami is attacked, leaving him in a coma.

“Harlem Shuffle” is the latest work by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Colson Whitehead. Ray Carney appears to be an upstanding salesman making a decent life for himself and his family. Few people know he comes from a line of hoods and crooks. Cash is tight for Ray and soon he is drawn into a plan by his cousin Fred to rob the Hotel Theresa – the “Waldorf of Harlem.” Can Ray avoid getting killed, save his cousin, and grab his share of the big score all while keeping up his respectable front?

Mickie Lambert creates digital scrapbooks for clients, making sure precious souvenirs aren’t lost. Her latest client, Nadia, dies from an apparent suicide and Mickie begins curating her collection of mementos. But these tokens mean something to someone else, too, as she begins receiving threatening messages. Why are these trinkets so valuable? How did Nadia come to possess them? In the search for the truth, Mickie uncovers sinister secrets and crosses paths with a serial killer. “These Toxic Things” is by Rachel Howzell Hall.

A new Alaska Wild Series begins with “Thin Ice” by Paige Shelton. “The Noise” is a new thriller by James Patterson and J.D. Barker. Iris Johansen introduces a new character, gambler Logan Tanner, in the suspense novel “High Stakes.”

Historical fiction fans will want to read “Clark and Division” by Naomi Hirahara. After being released from a Japanese internment camp during WWII, Aki and her parents are being relocated to Chicago where Aki’s older sister, Rose, was sent months earlier. But on the eve of the family reunion, Rose is killed by a subway train. Although ruled a suicide, Aki knows there is more to the story. Inspired by historical events, this story has a real crime fiction plot.
