Ice Fishing Derby, Brewfest Just Around the Corner

January 4, 2023

The holidays are behind us and hopefully everyone had a good time with family and friends. The new year is upon us and for many that brings about a sense of starting fresh, a new beginning. Just because the holidays are over doesn't mean there is nothing to do with friends and family. In just over a month, on Saturday, February 4, the Chinook Rod & Gun Club will be holding their 4th Annual Ice Fishing Derby at Dry Fork reservoir just north of Chinook. Later in the afternoon on February 4, the Blaine County Fair Foundation will hold its 4th Annual Blaine County Brewfest. Both functions benefit great organizations and provide a lot of fun for everyone in attendance.

The Chinook Rod & Gun Club's 4th Annual Ice Fishing Derby will start taking Preregistration entries on Friday, February 3 from 6:00-8:00 pm. There are two locations set up to preregister, one in Havre at the Shanty Bar and the other in Chinook at the Pastime. Register early as entry is limited to 50 Anglers and will be granted on a first come first serve basis. Joe Kennedy, event organizer with the Rod & Gun Club stated that they had 48 Anglers on the ice a year ago and that was only because a few broke down while on their way. "We applied for approval to hold the Derby back in July and when we were granted approval it was again limited to 50 Anglers. I plan to meet with Biologist in Havre, visit with some and hopefully next year maybe we can increase the number to 75, but right now 50 is the limit - first come, first served.

The weather always plays a role in any outdoor winter event, so predicting numbers early is hard to tell. If the forecast on February 1 is for snow and thirty below, turnout will certainly be affected. The tournament requires a $30 registration fee and includes cash prizes for largest fish in each category: Walleye, Bass, Perch and Northern Pike as well as a taco feed to follow at the Pastime bar. A new addition to this year's tournament is a raffle. The grand prize will be a Two Night Ice Castle Rental on Nelson Reservoir, prize will be awarded as a $650 Sleeping Buffalo Gift Card. Tickets can be purchased from any Chinook Rod & Gun Club member. A portion of the funds raised will go to the Chinook Rod & Gun Club Scholarship Fund.

The Blaine County Fair Foundation is excited to be hosting their 4th Annual Brewfest on Saturday, February 4, 2023. The Brewfest will get underway at 4:00 pm at the Commercial Building at the Blaine County Fairgrounds. Proceeds from this event go to the Blaine County Fair Foundation. Several Brewers will be on hand for the event including Beavercreek Brewery, Triple Dog Brewery, Meadowlark Brewery, Big Springs Brewery as well as 10+ Taps from Havre distributors. Also taking place at the Brewfest will be Wine Tasting by Wine Shop at Home. Entertainment will be provided by 'America's Premier Cowboy Comedian' Kip Attaway. Traveling Tacos and Super Nachos will be available for attendees to enjoy.

Both of these events are fun for friends and family to enjoy together, take the kids and family out on the ice for some fun then get out of the cold and join in some adult beverages at the Brewfest by enjoying some wonderful company. Should be a good day for everyone, lets hope the weather cooperates!
