Harlem Library

January 11, 2023

Happy New Year from the Harlem Public Library! We hope one of your resolutions is to use your local library this year. We have many resources, services, programs and activities for you to take advantage of.

We invite you to participate in the 2023 Book Challenge. Each month the library selects a unique category of book for you to read. After you have completed the challenge contact the library and your name will be entered into a drawing to win a $10 gift card from a local business. The January Book Challenge is to read a book with a dual timeline. We have a selection on display for you to choose from.

The Book Club, a book discussion group for adults, is currently reading “The Home Place” by Carrie La Seur. We meet on Mondays, 4 P.M. in the library meeting room. We welcome you to join us. Contact the library for more information.

The library will be closed Monday, January 16 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Each week the library hosts programs for children and families. These include Storytime for children ages 0-5 and their parents/caregivers on Tuesdays at 10 A.M. After School Squad meets every Wednesday for elementary students from 3:30 – 4:30. Lego Club is held on Thursdays from 3:30 – 4:30 for all ages; preschool children must be accompanied by an adult.

Mark your calendars for these upcoming events: The Montana Library Network and the Harlem Public Library are happy to host the virtual program “Montana Fibershed – Connecting Montana Folks with Montana Fiber” on January 26, 6:30 – 8:00 P.M. with presenters Barbara French and Helena Harris. Montana Fibershed seeks to educate Montanans on the benefits of a place-based, local fiber system. Just like our food, our natural-fiber clothing also comes from the land. Montana Fibershed works to connect fiber producers to local designers, makers, and businesses to bolster the Montana textile economy. This program is free and open to all. Register at tinyurl.com/MTFibershed.

The second event celebrates chocolate, “Love Your Library Month” and Valentine’s Day! The library is hosting the event “Love Chocolate- Love Your Library!” on Monday, February 13 from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. This event will include everything chocolate, including tastings, fondue, crafts, decorated cakes voting, photo booth, and chocolate confections available to buy from local vendors.

The library is looking for people to enter the cake decorating contest with a Valentine’s or library theme. We are also asking community members to donate chocolate baked goods or candy for the chocolate tasting and sampling. Vendors who wish to sell their chocolate confections may host a table in the meeting room at no charge. There will be a limitof 4-6 spaces available, so contact the library as soon as possible (first come, first served). These confections will make great Valentine’s gifts! Contact the library to learn more.

New books this week include suspense thrillers “The Swell” by Allie Reynolds, “Forsaken Country” by Allen Eskens, “The Lies I Told” by Mary Burton and “Racing the Light” by Robert Crais.

New nonfiction selections are “Killing the Legends,” the Lethal Danger of Celebrity by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard, “Our Voice of Fire: A Memoir of a Warrior Rising” by Brandi Morin, and “You Are Not Alone,” a National Alliance on Mental Illness Guide to Navigating Mental Health by Ken Duckworth, M.D.
