HHS softball sees season end at Class A state tournament

The Havre High softball team reached yet another Class A state tournament this season, but it ended with two tough losses.

The Ponies competed in the State A tournament last weekend, where they fell to Frenchtown to open the tourney.

Havre Varsity Blue Ponies fell to Frenchtown Varsity Broncs 24-11 at Current Location on Thursday. Frenchtown Varsity Broncs collected 19 hits, while MHSA Havre Varsity Blue Ponies had nine.

The Blue Ponies jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning after Riely Doney hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run, and Kenzi Harwood singled, scoring two runs. The Broncs flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the third, scoring eight runs on five hits to take the lead, 8-3. The biggest blow in the inning was a double by Abbi Edwards that drove in two runs.

The Blue Ponies scored five runs on two hits in the top of the fourth inning. Tahlyn Olson drew a walk, scoring one run; Ainsley Courtnage drew a walk, scoring one run; Bree Hanson grounded out, scoring one run; and Doney singled, scoring two runs.

Frenchtown scored eight runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. Edwards doubled, scoring two runs; Aspen Courtney singled, scoring one run; Madysen DeSilva was struck by a pitch, driving in a run; and Delanie Magnuson hit a grand slam to center field.

Smith earned the win for Frenchtown. The hurler allowed seven hits and eight runs over five and one-third innings, striking out six and walking five. Carina Purkett took the loss for the Ponies. The pitcher went two and two-thirds innings, giving up eight runs (zero earned) on six hits, striking out three and walking five.

Doney drove the middle of the lineup, leading the Blue Ponies with three runs batted in. The third baseman went 1-for-3 on the day. Olivia Keller, the Ponies' number-seven hitter, led the team with three hits in four at-bats. Harwood collected two hits for MHSA Havre Varsity Blue Ponies in four at-bats. Courtnage paced MHSA Havre Varsity Blue Ponies with three walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, collecting eight walks for the game.

In the loser-out game, Havre fell to Laurel 13-1. Laurel was the first to get on the board in the first when Adrienne Roth grounded out, scoring one run. The Locomotives added to their early lead in the top of the second inning when Ashley Brown doubled, scoring one run, Harper Andersen laid down a sacrifice bunt, scoring one run, and Emerson Gunther singled, scoring two runs. The Locomotives extended their early lead with five runs in the top of the third thanks to RBI singles by Brown, Claire Anderson, and Roth.

Anderson earned the win for the Locomotives. The hurler allowed three hits and one run over three innings, striking out four and walking one. Ali Moore took the loss for the Blue Ponies. The hurler went two and one-third innings, allowing three runs on five hits, striking out three and walking one. Carina Purkett opened the game for MHSA Havre Varsity Blue Ponies. The pitcher allowed nine hits and 10 runs over two and two-thirds innings, striking out one and walking two.

Kenzi Harwood went 1-for-2 at the plate and led the team with one run batted in. Gracie Kuszmaul led the Blue Ponies with two hits in two at-bats.

It was another successful season for the Ponies, led by head coach Tony Vigliotti.
