Date for Community Yard Sale Changes

In anticipation of what looked to be record setting heat on Saturday, August 1, when temperatures reached the 100 degree mark, the Harlem Civic Association postponed its Community Yard Sale. Although the Harlem City Park location and the time frame of 9:00-3:00 p.m. remain the same, the new date will be August 15. Set-up begins at 8:00 a.m.

“Due to the triple digit heat conditions that were expected, we wanted to be mindful of everyone’s safety,” explained Harlem Civic Association President, Kayla Hudon.

Given the new date, vendors are encouraged to reserve a space, and residents are invited to save the date so that they can shop local while supporting their community. Vendor spaces are ten by twenty feet for displaying wares. These might include crafts, artwork, rummage, or homemade goods.

“Although space is free, tables are not provided,” Hudon reported.

The major difference in this year’s event, according to Hudon, is the addition of food trucks. “We have three committed,” Hudon said, “But more are welcome. We decided to go the food truck route because we just don’t have the membership to put on a community barbecue.”

While the park will be bustling with activity on that Saturday, patrons will also have access to a map of other sites in town that will offer goods for sale. The Civic Association’s rationale is that people won’t have to relocate all of their items to the City Park if they wish to have a garage sale in the Harlem area on that same day when people are already out wandering.

“Send us your address as soon as possible if you want to be included on the map,” Hudon stated. “We have the Hutterites coming with their veggies, garden produce, and such, and ten other vendors already signed up for space in the park, but now that people know it won’t be so scorching hot, we hope to get more participation.”
