The Chinook Chapter of the FFA attended Winter Districts on Tuesday, December 10 in Winifred and brought home two awards. The Junior Parliamentary Procedure team captured second place, a status which qualifies them for State FFA competition, and Morgan Friede placed third in FFA testing. Chinook’s Division B Team had a great showing at the 35th Montana Science Olympiad (MTSO), according to their coach, Kendall Harwood. Iota Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international society for women educators, met November 25th at the Chinook Motor Inn with Val White as their guest speaker. On Monday, December 16, the Chinook Chapter of the FFA held its Greenhand Degree dinner in the Chinook High School shop. The Friends of the Harlem Library held their annual Wine & Cheese Fundraiser last Wednesday with proceeds going to projects being conducted throughout the year at the Harlem Library. Samples from 25 deer harvested around the state tested positive for chronic wasting disease last week. The majority of the new positive samples were from animals harvested within CWD Management Zones, where the disease is known to exist. Two of the positive samples were from areas where the disease had not been previously detected. These include a mule deer doe harvested in hunting district 650 south of the Fort Peck Reservation, and a white-tailed buck harvested in HD 702 in Rosebud County. The final results are in from the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Havre check station for the 2019 hunting season. The check station was open for eight weekends; from Oct. 12 (the open of general antelope) through Dec. 1 (the end of the deer/elk general season). At the latest Finals Eddie Hawley and his team roping partner, Myles John, won their second consecutive world title. The Blaine County Fair will no longer compete with nor complement the Fourth of July celebrations of Blaine County citizens in 2020. To make the dates more 4-H friendly and to accommodate the PRCA rodeo schedule, the dates of the fair will be August 12-16. The Sweet Park Board announced last week that they have nearly reached their funding goal and should be able to purchase and install new playground equipment at the Sweet Park this summer if a few more dollars trickle in to the Playground Equipment Fund. With a sizable donation from the Davies Family Endowment Fund of the Montana Community Foundation, the Park Board is seeing the finish line.
