Members of the Chinook High School classes of 1956-1957-1958 are gathering this weekend for their 59th, 60th and 61st reunions. They would welcome greetings from any friends who may also be in the area. Registration for around 50 attendees begins 5 p.m. on Friday at the Chinook Motor Inn. Saturday morning these classmates will be at the Blaine County and Wildlife Museums. The fall season is here, and with it comes Harlem’s Fall Festival. The event will begin with the Harlem Hunger Walk starting at 2 PM; entry forms for this 5K walk are available at Richman Insurance (forms have all the needed information). The walk proceeds will benefit the Harlem food pantry. All are invited to the potluck picnic to be held in City Park at 4 PM; sloppy joes and lemonade will be provided. They have been landscaping the post office since school started. Before the fair members also expanded the FFA booth at the Blaine County Fair Grounds. On Sunday, August 27, 2017, American Legion Auxiliary Blaine Unit #48 of Chinook hosted a reception recognizing the Girls State and Boys State delegates that represented Chinook High School this past summer. Brenda Mohar, Legion Auxiliary member, came to the Turner School this past Thursday afternoon to present the Americanism Essay winners and Poppy poster winners. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently awarded a grant to purchase and install technology that will allow students at Meadowlark Elementary to experience "virtual field trips." Two wildfires have raised concerns with locals in the southwestern part of the county. While each fire had its own unique conditions, the most recent fire was on Lloyd Road south off Bose Road. That fire began late this past Saturday afternoon but was quickly extinguished. Valerie White has been selected to replace Kelly Mills as the Blaine County Superintendent of Schools. White was sworn in Thursday, September 7 by District Court Judge Yvonne Laird. As of noon Monday, September 11, 2017 the Hill County Sheriff’s Office is lifting all evacuation orders in Hill County. Hwy 234, Sucker Creek Road and Taylor Road are all open to public access. All side roads in Beaver Creek Park are still closed and Beaver Creek Park remains closed to all recreation. Cabin owners are allowed access to their recreational cabins from 7am to 7pm to check on, clean and maintain their cabins. The East Fork Fire began late Sunday afternoon, August 27, on Rocky Boy reservation. By the week's end the fire had spread north and east to parts of Hill and Blaine Counties as well as Beaver Creek Park. The Chinook Area Chamber is bringing back Farmer-Rancher Night on October 21. The idea is to show appreciation to the farmers and ranchers for the economic contribution they make to local and area businesses. Earlier in the summer "Bibbs" Pyette, from Houston, was visiting her mom, Mary Pyette, out at the family home on Coal Mine Road west of Chinook. Sitting on the front porch, Bibbs heard a commotion. When she checked it out a rabbit was head-butting a gutter drain pipe down the driveway. Later, Mary was able to photograph the rabbit using its teeth to pull the drain pipe away from the down spout.
