For the past two summers a dedicated group of volunteers has been meeting in Fort Benton for two week-long work sessions each summer. They are refurbishing the "Mandan," one of three keelboats built in the 1960's for the movie "Big Sky." Only one of the three boats has survived and it has been on the shore of the Missouri River in downtown Fort Benton for nearly sixty years. In 2024 it was hoped to have the old boat ship shape again and on display for its sixtieth anniversary at the spot. The...

Charlotte LaTray-Vermillion thought the day was just like any other and the flu like symptoms she had was just another cold. This went on for three days, thinking her symptoms were finally going to ease up, she realized it was just getting worse after she noticed blood in her vomit. Not only were the symptoms becoming alarming, but this was also going on right at the start of the Covid outbreak. Charlotte decided it was time to be seen by a professional. After waiting for almost an entire day...

Lesley Zellmer, from Chinook, recently mentioned to me she had just returned from Oregon where she participated in a relay run from Mount Hood to the Coast at Seaside, Oregon. I knew she was a runner but was not familiar with this relay which, turns out, has been held for 41 years and, for the record, is 196 miles long. Per the relay group's official website, "The Hood to Coast Relay (HTC Relay) is the most popular and largest running relay race in the world, annually drawing participants from...

When Amy Stiffarm was a graduate student at University of Montana, she learned that Native American women have low rates of breastfeeding. But she didn't understand why. "Until one day, I came across (reports) about how historical trauma and boarding school trauma took away our parenting knowledge and knowledge around how to feed your babies," said Stiffarm, who is Aaniiih and a descendent of the Chippewa Cree and Blackfeet tribes. "I had never seen that before - something that was talking about...

Now in its second season, the Drool in the Pool event held this Labor Day weekend seems to be well on its way to becoming an end of the year tradition at the Chinook City Pool. Organizers said 19 dogs were registered for the event with some even willing to swim in the pool, though not all. P.A.W.S was there showcasing a couple of cute adoptable pups. The doggie theme was complemented by pronto pups cooked and served onsite by the Chinook Lions Club. It may be a truism that "you cannot lead all...

Businesses, non-profits, civic clubs, professional groups and even local chambers of commerce rely on slogans to quickly convince a target audience to buy a product, a service or to believe in something. Readers will likely recognize the value of a successful slogan by thinking of advertising slogans that stick in their minds-like Kentucky Fried Chicken's "finger lickin' good," "America runs on Dunkin (donuts and coffee)" and one of the most enduring slogans still recognized by 90% of Americans...

Fairgoers may recall a young woman sitting at a long table in the Commercial Building. Her table was full of 'giveaways,' interesting 'do-dads,' and lots of informational pieces all promoting healthier lifestyles for kids. The young woman is Ann Armstrong and she is the Blaine County Prevention Specialist, a job she's held since last March. I was curious to learn about Ann's work and plans for our youth. Here's information about some of the programming Ann has done in Blaine County and other...

In early August sixteen Air Force veterans and friends, mostly from the west coast, came to Chinook and Harlem to visit the memorials for the fourteen airmen killed in an air collision north of Harlem. One of the visitors was a loadmaster (crew member responsible for loading and unloading cargo) on one of the four planes doing a practice refueling exercise in the pre-daylight hours. November 30, 2023, will be the thirtieth...

BCJ News Late July my wife Sherry and I stopped in Fort Benton on our way home from Great Falls. After walking along the river downtown we drove north along the highway (MT 387) that passes by Shep’s grave and the airport, then accesses US 87 northeast of Fort Benton. I did a double take when I realized the old paddle wheel boat that sat along the road for years was gone. I’d wondered about the deteriorating boat every time we passed through Fort Benton on our way home. I began inquiring wha...

About 45 local seniors enjoyed a picnic in the park last Tuesday hosted by the Chinook Senior Center. A first of its kind event held away from the Center was well received and attended by about 45 seniors. The weather and mosquitoes (the latter eliminated with some help from the local sprayers) cooperated. The menu was fried chicken, potato salad and slaw. The main meal was complimented with a chocolate pudding dessert and plenty of cold drinks to keep the guests hydrated. The last couple of...

Millie Walter is the daughter of Ben and Patty Hall. Millie and her husband, Stefan, met when he was an exchange student at Turner High for a year. Their nine year old son, Lukas, created a slide presentation titled "Germany from Above"...

By Steve Edwards BCJ News Early last June I stopped in Fort Benton for a walk along the Missouri River. From the Visitors' Center I was driving northeast on Front Street to look at the "Mandan," the old keelboat that sits on the river bank adjacent to the Lewis and Clark Memorial and the boat ramp. I could see the mast was gone from the keelboat. At the keelboat site a group of guys were lounging in the shade surrounded by tools and wood pieces. The fence around the Mandan was open on the river...

In an era when over half the employees in the U.S. stay in one job for only 4.3 years Jim Teel's 37 years with the City of Chinook is a serious statistical abnormality. Jim started with the city as a maintenance worker on June 30, 1986 and retired on June 30, 2023. When I was asked to write a story about his completed career with the city I was curious to learn about this quiet guy that I really only knew in passing. As we started talking about his long tenure as Superintendent of Streets his...

Each first Sunday of the month the four churches that joined to form the Milk River Churches hold a joint worship, typically rotating among the three churches in Chinook (Methodist, American Lutheran and Presbyterian) and the Havre Presbyterian Church. For a summer break from the pattern the coordinating committee opted to hold a Saturday night campout and a Sunday worship and potluck lunch at the Zurich Park lodge. About 40 people attended and all four churches were well represented. It was a...
