Erickson Honored with Quilt of Valor at Sunday Service in Turner

December 19, 2018

Leneus Erickson was presented with the Quilt of Valor at the end of services this past Sunday.

Elissa Zellmer presented Leneus Erickson with a Quilt of Valor this past Sunday at the close of church services on Sunday at the Lutheran Church in Turner. Many family members, church family, and guests were there to see this very special presentation and congratulate him.

Mrs. Zellmer wrapped the beautiful quilt around Lenny and told him and the crowd the significant meaning of a Quilt of Valor.

The quilt is made of three layers. Each layer has a significant meaning.

The top with its many colors, shapes and fabrics represents the communities and the many individuals we are.

The batting, the filler, is the center of the quilt, its warmth. It represents our hope that this quilt will bring warmth, comfort, peace and healing to the individual who receives it.

The backing is the strength that supports the other layers. It represents the strength of the recipient, the support of his or her family, our communities, and our nation.

Each stitch that holds the layers together represents love, gratitude, and sometimes the tears of the maker.

The quilt also has a three part message from the giver to the person receiving the quilt. That is:

First, we HONOR him or her for their service. We honor them for leaving all they hold dear and to stand in harm's way in a time of crisis, protecting us from the effects of war.

Next, we know that FREEDOM IS NOT FREE. The cost of freedom is the dedication of lives of men and women like Lenny, and this quilt is meant to say thank you for his sacrifice.

And finally, this quilt is meant to offer COMFORT to the person receiving it, and to remind him or her that although their family and friends cannot be with them at all times, they are forever in our thoughts and our hearts.

This quilt is an absolute beautiful gift to Lenny from Elissa. It will be cherished forever.

Congratulations, Lenny! And, thank you for your service and God Bless America!!
