'Beeter wrestlers perform very well in Great Falls over the weekend

Chinook freshman Ethan Liddle wrestled very well over the weekend finishing second at 132 pounds in the Walt and Trudy Currie JV Tournament Saturday at Great Falls High. Liddle earned a 12-9 decision over CMR's Logan Sherwood, above, Friday at the CMR Holiday Classic.

The Chinook Sugarbeeter and Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbird wrestling teams were in Great Falls this weekend.

Six sugarbeeter wrestlers competed Friday at the prestigious CMR Holiday Classic and wrestled hard. Senior Ross Reed wrestled his way to day two of the tournament while the others competed Saturday at Great Falls High.

Competing Saturday in the Walt and Trudy Curry JV Tournament were five Sugarbeeter wrestlers including sophomore Rebecca Stroh at 113 pounds, freshman Ethan Liddle (132, sophomore Garrett Pruttis (132), junior JT Hauer (160) and freshman Wyatt Dunbar (205). Hays/Lodge Poles Mikkel Main also competed in the tournament on Saturday.

Reed began the Holiday Classic Friday with a bye before falling in round two and finding himself in the consolation bracket that afternoon.

The senior got on roll as Reed pinned Chouteau's Calvin Maples in 2:22 to advance to the fourth consolation round.

Reed then picked up another win defeating Tyler Carter of CMR in 2:24 to finish the day.

Saturday morning Reed began the day with another win by pinfall, taking down Broadwater-Townsend's Ty Steele in 2:06. His tournament would end in the sixth consolation round of the Holiday Classic after losing by Major-Decision to Billings Skyview's Jose Rodriguez 14-4.

At the Walt and Trudy Currie the 'Beeter wrestlers found themselves on the winning side of the ledger more often than not.

Four of the five wrestlers found themselves in the Championship match with Hauer and Dunbar claiming individual titles.

Hauer has been wrestling very well to start the season and began Saturday with a win over Anaconda's Brennen Kolaski by pinfall at the 2:13 mark.

Hauer then defeated Spencer Olson of Broadwater-Townsend by pinfall (:45). The remainder of Hauer's journey to the 160 pound title was uneventful as he earned forfeit wins in the semi-final and final rounds.

Dunbar opened Saturday with a bye before facing Ruger Young of Helena in Round two. Dunbar pinned Young in 3:45 to advance. He the defeated Nick Haley of Columbia Falls in the semifinal (:35) to advance to the championship match.

In the final Dunbar earned a fall over Brock Hanford of Fort Benton/Big Sandy to claim the 205 pound title.

Stroh won her opening match Saturday morning, defeating Nate Meagher of Broadwater/Townsend by pinfall at 2:18. She then earned a quarterfall deceision over Aaron Kelly of Great Falls CMR 4-2 to advance.

Chinook senior Ross Reed competes at the CMR Holiday Classic in Great Falls, Friday and Saturday. Reed was the only Sugarbeeter wrestler to make it to day two of the prestigious tournament.

In Stroh's semifinal match against Jefferson's Christian Davis she earned another pinfall, this time at 4:30.

In the championship match Stroh fell to Zach Ewalt of CMR by pinfall (1:20) to finish second at 113 pounds.

Freshman Ethan Liddle received a bye to begin Saturday and the won his quarterfinal match by pinfall over Helena's Andrew Cotton (2:38). Liddle defeated Great Falls High's Connor Root in the semifinal by pinfall (3:43). before falling to Logan Broadle of Poplar in the final by pinfall (:42) to finish second at 132 pounds.

The Sugarbeeters will compete Friday at the Shelby Mixer before heading into the holiday break.

After utilizing the break to work on areas that need fine tuning, working on mechanics and preparing for the stretch run the team will return to the mat in the new year on January 3 at the Chester/J-I Mixer. They will then compete at the Cut Bank Invitational on January 4-5.
