Chinook boys and girls swept by old 9C rivals in return from Christmas break

After what seemed like a lengthy Christmas break, it was time for the Chinook boys and girls basketball teams to get back on the hardwood.

And last Friday night, the Sugarbeeters hosted Box Elder in a battle of former District 9C rivals.

In the boys game, things came right down to the end, before Box Elder was able to win 56-51. It was a back-and-forth game, but the Bears stayed ahead in the fourth stanza to pull off the win for the 9C.

Britt Powell led the Beeters with 14 points, while Cooper Standiford added 10 points and seven rebounds against the defending Class C state champions.

The girls game between Box Elder and Chinook last Friday was also close, but in the end, it was a tough home loss for the Sugarbeeters.

Box Elder had a strong second half, and ultimately handed the Beeters a 56-45 loss in Chinook.

On Saturday, both Chinook teams played another former rival in the Fort Benton Longhorns. Only now, it’s a Class B matchup after Fort Benton moved up this school year.

And moving up proved to be no problem for Fort Benton as the Longhorns downed the Chinook boys 65-52. Fort Benton led the entire way, and the Beeters had to play catchup. Chinook did get 19 points by Ryan Bell and 14 from Jameson Nordboe in the loss.

The Sugarbeeter girls meanwhile, were in search of their first 1B win again Saturday night when they battled another old 9C rival, the Fort Benton Longhorns. However, it wasn’t meant to be as Fort Benton edged Chinook 53-42.

The Beeters went on a 16-8 run in the second quarter and only trailed 24-23 at half. From there though, Fort Benton outscored Chinook 29-19 to pull off the win.

The Chinook boys and girls are right back on the floor Thursday night when the Beeters host the Cut Bank Wolves in a 1B doubleheader at the Chinook Gymnasium. The Beeters then return to the road as they visit Fairfield on Saturday.
