It's on to state for Sugarbeeters and Wildcats this weekend in Billings
What a weekend for the Chinook boys wrestling team. And now the Sugarbeeters are headed for Billings and the Class B-C State Tournament.
Last Saturday in Malta, the Chinook boys scored 143 points to place fourth overall at the Eastern B-C Divisional Tournament.
On the heels of nine placers, Chinook posted an outstanding showing and will be sending a big contingent of grapplers to this weekend's state tournament, for head coach Ben Stroh.
Leading the way for Chinook was a pair of Eastern B-C finalists. Charlie Buck wound up second at 103 pounds and Hayden Berreth finished second at 132 pounds. Both grapplers lost to opponents from Huntley-Project, the Eastern B-C team champion, who scored 329 points. Glasgow was a distant second, followed by Malta.
Also reaching the podium for Chinook was Sam Sanders, who finished sixth at 126 pounds, Griffen Crowley, who was fourth at 165, Owen Davies, who placed third at 175, and Julian Powell, who was third at 215. Keegan Green also finished sixth at 144 pounds, while Patrick Mckenzie took fourth at 175.
Harlem also had three placers in Lucas Blackcrow at 138 and Ethan Klingaman finished third at 190. Jasper LaMere also finished sixth at 285 pounds.
Harlem wound up 13th with 40 points. Other area teams included Fort Benton taking seventh, Big Sandy finishing 14th, and CJI took 19th place. North Star and HLP also competed.
The Eastern B-C in Malta was also an exciting one for the Chinook girls. The Beeters finished eighth with 63 points, and qualified Kimber Klein, who finished second at 100 pounds, Kyla Berreth, who took eighth at 115 pounds, Bailey Billmayer, who placed fourth at 120 and Madelyn Billmayer, who was eighth at 120.
Harlem finished just ahead of Chinook with 65 points, and got a divisional title from Emma Klingaman at 135 pounds. In all, the Wildcats qualified five for the girls state tournament.
Fort Benton won the Eastern B-C title with 184.5 points, while Glasgow was second and Baker finished third.
All boys and girls who qualified for the state tournament will converge on Billings starting today. The All-Class State Boys and Girls Wrestling Tournaments will run through Saturday afternoon at the First Interstate Bank Arena at the Metra in Billings.
