  • BREAKING NEWS: Rain hits area, more needed

    Tim Leeds|Jun 17, 2026

Steady rain has hit the area — and much of the rest of the state — for the past few weeks, bringing much-needed precipitation after months of heavy drought. But while the National Drought Monitor shows improvement, this part of Montana, and, again, much of the rest of the state, are still in dire need of more rain. But it poured, a steady, mostly gentle rain, for most of four days. From Saturday, May 30, through Tuesday, June 2, National Weather Service recorded at its station at the Havre City-County Airport 2.87 inches of rain, including a r...

  • Keeping Kids Engaged During the Summer

    Julianne Snedigar|Jun 17, 2026

Most of our area schools have been out of session for summer break for a couple of weeks now. For many children, summer is one of the most exciting times of the year. School is out, the weather is warm, and opportunities for adventure seem endless. While summer should absolutely include time for fun and relaxation, research shows that keeping youth engaged in meaningful activities can help support learning, social development, and overall well-being. One of the best ways to keep kids engaged during the summer is to encourage participation in a...

There will be a movie shown tomorrow, 6/18/26, from Disability Rights Montana, titled Crip Camp. That will start at 3:00, and there will be time for a discussion after the film. T...

Yes, Austin Haney was back and delivered the most engaging, informative description of Montana Before Statehood: 1864-1889. We are so very fortunate to have these...

Vauxhall scored 11 runs in the second inning and was leading 11-2, but Havre battled back, scoring nine runs in the last four innings. However, Vauxhall’s offense was too much in the end. The second game was a different story, as the Northstars were dominant in an 11-2 win over t...

  • OUT OUR WAY: " Check your 6"

    Jun 17, 2026

Out our way, now and then folks have to deal with cougars. I recall a jogger who was attacked from behind by a mountain lion … and later on, a hunter who, while hunting elk, was being hunted himself. In both cases, the attacks came from behind. I had two run-ins with lions over the years, but I was not alone. True, I did not know the lions were there — but Doc, my quarter horse — and Jack, my Rez dog did. Long before an attack was possible, the big cats had been spotted and the sneak attacks thwarted. I recall that scripture: “He watchin...
