According to the American Red Cross, collecting blood donations can be especially challenging in late summer and early fall. As students head back to school and fall activities pick up, fewer people take the time to donate—but the need never slows down. More donors are needed now to help ensure a stable blood supply this season. Here in Chinook, we’ve always been known for looking out for one another. That’s why we’re inviting all eligible donors to roll up a sleeve and join us for a community blood drive on Tuesday, September 16, from noon to...

With mercury readings in Blaine County still hovering in the upper 70s and lower 80s, it's difficult for some residents to imagine frost. However, as overnight temperatures have begun to dip into the mid-40s, we are reminded to soak up the sunshine and warm days before the first cold snap descends. Now is the perfect time to squeeze in those last lake days, hiking adventures, weekend road trips, and barbecue dinners on the deck or backyard patio. In Montana, history testifies that as the...

From those who stop for lunch at one of the tables to those who view the Airmen's Memorial, the Centennial Park located at the south end of Harlem near Highway 2 sees a variety of visitors. A touring couple recently handed a hundred dollars to one of the park's volunteer caretakers to replace what they described as "a rickety table." As Kathy and Leroy Miller, travelers from Forest, Ohio, picnicked under the park's gazebo, they noticed that the table was wobbly. Darwin Zellmer, a member of the...

In a PBS News Hour interview dated August 15, Teri Finneman, an author and journalism professor at the University of Kansas, talked about the critical role that local newspapers play in a small town. “When the United States was settled, a newspaper was one of the first businesses that was established. It made you a real town to have a newspaper. It is a central place in the community, especially in a time when the nation is so divisive,” Finneman stated. She goes on to say, “A newspaper is really that central place to get information about...

CHINOOK – Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is receiving several reports of dead rainbow trout at Faber Reservoir 25 miles south of Chinook in Blaine County. FWP officials believe this is most likely due to a natural event caused by low dissolved oxygen levels in the pond. There is no current concern for human or pet health and safety and fish may still be harvested from the pond. "Fish, like humans, need oxygen to survive," says Tyler Haddix, Region 6 fisheries manager. "Most summer fish kills a...

With school back in session, the streets around campuses will once again be filled with the familiar rush of students heading to and from class, parents dropping off their children, and buses making their rounds. It's a busy scene, and a good reminder for everyone to slow down, stay alert, and use extra caution-especially near grade schools where the youngest students are on the move. In Chinook, school policy states that student crossing guards are assigned to help children safely cross the...

Across the Hi-Line, August is fair month, and with the Blaine County Fair past, various families now focus on August as back-to-school month. While many of our monthly designations are in fact determined by activities and tradition, a fair number of national days are invented by organizations or companies hoping to generate interest in their mission or products. That's where we get National Creamsicle Day on August 14, for example, or National Potato Day on August 19. "Creamsicle" is the brand...

It was certainly a wet weekend, but as always, r...
