Timely filing a Notice of Loss is required for all crops including grasses. For losses on crops covered by the Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP), producers must timely report damage or loss to their administrative County Office. For all low yield and value-loss crop claims, a CCC-576 Part B Notice of Loss must be filed within 15 calendar days of earlier of the date disaster occurs (or becomes apparent) or the normal harvest date. However, all producers should be aware that deadlines to provide initial notice to FSA do now vary...
The letters you see missing here AMERICAN RED CROSS may not seem like a big deal. But the letters A, B and O make up our main blood groups. And for a patient in the hospital needing blood, it’s everything. Only 3 out of 100 people in the U.S. donate blood, yet every two seconds someone needs it. Fewer people are donating blood to help patients. You can change that by joining the Missing Types movement and fill in the missing blood types. By donating blood you’ll help kids battling cancer, accident victims, and patients fighting lif...

The old saying goes "April showers bring May flowers", the question now is what do June showers bring? This past month saw all of Blaine County receiving above normal precipitation throughout the month. For the most part the storms have just brought sustained rainfall with some minor thunder and lightning. Blaine County was drenched by a welcome June shower that saw rain fall steadily for more than two day this past week. The weather station at the Harlem airport, one of the few official stations in the county, was working overtime last week. Reports from accross the region vary, with most reporting from 2.5" - 3.5". Weather, as we know it, is fickle this time of year. This welcomed moisture is hopefully the first of many perfectly timed storms that will be mixed in with just enough sunshine to...

Twenty five years ago in July, Kelcey and Nancy Diemert moved to Chinook, just in time to share in the All-Class Reunion and its festivities. As the community's new Registered Pharmacists who had recently graduated from the University of Montana's Pharmacy School in 1993, the couple was struck by how welcoming and supportive people were. After having spent a year in Seattle, the Diemerts were ready to put down roots and set up shop in a small town. "Chinook is like one big family, and this has b...
It’s the final week for Men’s Health Month! Though we are sad to see the month close, I’d like to end it with a very powerful topic of discussion and an imperative key to men’s health. This week’s topic is Mental Health. The statistics behind men’s mental health is staggering and shows how little discussions are being had to ensure that men’s mental health needs are being addressed. There are over 6 million men who suffer from depression; however, it is often undiagnosed as they present with fatigue, irritability or loss of interest in h...
The Milk River Gobblers Club of Havre has distributed 4 scholarships this year totaling $1500.00. At the start of this year, only 2 $500.00 scholarships were going to be awarded. These scholarships are awarded to those individuals interested in pursuing a field involving some type of outdoor “wildlife” degree. The Blaine County Fair is something everyone looks forward to each summer. The dates of the fair change from year to year, but the excitment of going remains the same. In the 80's the fair took place at the end of August, and provided a great reprieve from the hassles of the first days of school. From that point on the fair has been moved up a little bit every few years. This year the Blaine County Fair takes place over the Fourth of July weekend and will also coinside with the Chinook High Scho...

State and local public health officials are reminding Montanans to take steps to avoid mosquito bites and prevent infection with West Nile Virus (WNV). In Montana, WNV season usually begins in July and ends in October, as this is when the mosquitoes that transmit WNV emerge. The best way to prevent mosquito-borne diseases, is to protect yourself from mosquito bites. While mosquitoes found in Montana are unable to transmit diseases like Zika virus, they do spread WNV. The virus can also infect horses and birds, with birds serving as the source o...

Fifty one years ago, those attending the 1968 National FFA Convention engaged in heated debate. Donald Shinn from New Jersey had declared on the business floor, "Any student who is regularly enrolled in vocational agriculture is entitled to become an active member of any chartered FFA chapter." At that time, approximately 3,300 females were enrolled in vocational agricultural classes. The motion was quickly seconded by Richard Posthumus from Michigan, but it was defeated. The FFA would not...
