His duties include supervising all of the criminal and death investigations, assisting the Sheriff in performing administrative duties and budget planning. Visitors to, or travelers going by, the Bear Paw Battlefield, south of Chinook, may not be aware but the south part of the entrance sign was taken down, refurbished and erected again during the winter. It's a project supported partially by funds from the Friends of Bear Paw, Big Hole and Canyon Creek Battlefields (Friends Group) with some labor and materials donated by Sam Jaha of Jaha Painting in Chinook. Chinook Lions Club members Richard Cronk and Jon Martin recently visited the Meadowlark Elementary first-grade classes of teachers Courtney Bell and Kasie Gandenberger. The Chinook Lions were on hand to continue their clubs four-decade tradition of giving a miniature flag to each Meadowlark first grader. FSA would like to remind Montana producers that they have until March 15, 2017 to sign-up for the Noninsurable Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) coverage for all 2017 spring planted NAP crops except spring seeded rye, speltz, triticale, wheat, and mixed forage. NAP provides a catastrophic level (CAT) coverage based on the amount of loss that exceeds 50 percent of the expected production at 55 percent of the average market price for the crop. This event includes the Bread Show, which will be held Friday, March 10, with entry time 8:00 A.M.-9:30 A.M. in Harlem High School big gym. The Chinook Area Chamber of Commerce has purchased 30 street banners that should be going up along Highway 2 and Indiana Street sometime in March. The banners are designed to attract attention and welcome visitors and travelers to the city of Chinook. Jessi and Alex Billmayer of Hogeland delivered fifty filled thermal Thirty One totes to Benefis NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) in Great Falls last weekend. This exceeded their goal from in the past. They had each bag filled with a variety of goodies including books, baby blankets, baby beanies, ice packs, hand sanitizers, notebooks and pens and pencils, and other handy items that one needs when staying overnight. The District Tournament ended Saturday in Havre. The Turner teams made a good showing and played their hearts out. Everyone in the community enjoyed watching or listening on the radio to the teams play. We’re proud of our kids and how they displayed good sportmanship. Thanks for an enjoyable year. Tom and Lucy Fairbank took in the District 9C basketball tournament games this weekend. Bill and Mary Hake were in Great Falls for a couple days this past week. Jack and Carla Van Voast had a dinner at their home on Saturday night. Those coming were Bill and Mary Hake, and Dick and Marge Hickel. Montana’s county election administrators and county officials are anticipating an upcoming special federal election. Montana’s only member of the U.S. House, Representative Ryan Zinke, has been tapped by President Trump to become U.S. Secretary of the Interior. If and when Zinke resigns his congressional seat, Montana Governor Steve Bullock is required to call a special federal election to fill the seat. Meghan Benenate joined the city of Chinook on January 23 as the new Assistant City Clerk. The native of Jacksonville, Florida, came to Chinook about two years ago. She and her husband, Anthony, moved to Chinook from Watford City, North Dakota. They moved to North Dakota following Anthony's job in the oil patch, where he still works. Chinook High School is putting on a fundraiser, for science teacher Ms. Wood and study Hall advisor Ms. Olson. The students chose five staff members for the community to vote on by putting money in a designated jar. The Annual Art Show will be held in conjunction with the 68th Montana Seed show to be held on March 9, 10, and 11, 2017. March 10th is set up day from 8:00 A.M. until 10:00 A.M The Seed Show provides the display board and hooks. The boards are 4 feet by 8 feet and will be set up and ready when you arrive. Plans call for a new computerized system for notifying county residents about emergency situations to be in place by mid-March. Blaine County Sheriff Glenn Huestis said the initial training for lead county employees on how to use the new system should be completed this week. Those trained will soon begin instruction for the rest of the county departments and other agencies that will be using the system. Results from Lewistown Mechanics, held on January 28th, included Austin Swanson receiving 18th place, and Patrick McMaster receiving 20th place overall individually for the Junior Mechanics.
