The Fort Belknap Community Economic Development (FBCEDC) recently received a $35,000 Native Agriculture and Food Systems Initiative (NAFSI) grant from the First Nations Development Institute of Longmont, Colorado. This award will support the Red Paint Creek Kitchen Project.

The grant purpose is to create a commercial kitchen equipped with NSF certified equipment, to increase the food capacity for the Red Paint Creek Trading Post and satisfy the healthy food needs of the Lodge Pole, Hays, and Fort Belknap communities. The commercial kitchen will allow for locally grown food preparation, preservation techniques, culinary classes, that will satisfy the needs of having healthy foods for a longer period of time. Locally grown produce and value-added food products will be more readily available to Fort Belknap communities.

Harlan Mount, FBCEDC Executive Director states the First Nation Development Institute offers grant opportunities to strengthen and revitalize Native American economies and communities. “I believe the impact of the grant will increase the knowledge of the different types of food preservation available and assist with processing locally grown produce and value-added food products.”

FBCEDC is a nonprofit corporation striving to promote a thriving economy on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation. FBCEDC is governed by a board of directors, consisting of four enrolled members of the Fort Belknap Indian Community.

The contact information for the FBCEDC is (406) 353-2485 and the address is 143 Assiniboine Avenue, P.O. Box 1177, Fort Belknap Agency, Harlem, MT 59526.
