September 23, 2020

The Harlem Lady Cat Volleyball team fell to District 2B rival Malta on Thursday night in a five set thriller that had plenty of action. The Lady Cats played well in the 27-25, 27-29, 25-18, 23-25, 15-9 conference clash.

Harlem Head Coach Kim Faulkinberry and her Lady Cats record currently sits at 1-3 but that doesn’t accurately depict the effort this team has put forth on the court to begin the season.

The Lady Cats have been competitive in nearly every match thus far and were again Thursday in an epic battle with their District 2B rivals to the east.

Fans certainly got their money’s worth watching these two teams battle it out. Malta surged forward at the end of the first set to win the opener 27-25.

While the Lady Cats had opportunities in the first set they were able to capitalize on similar opportunities in the second.

The two teams took each others best shot and responded with one of their own. Like the opener, set number two needed extra points to determine a winner. This time it was Harlem that was able to string a couple of points together to win the set 29-27.

Momentum swung back in favor of the visiting M-ettes in set number three. Malta managed to gain some separation late in the set and went up 2-1 in the match with a 25-18 set win.

Not backing down an inch the Lady Cats battled back in set four with another hard fought win, 25-23 to even the match at 2-2.

In the deciding fifth set the M-ettes jumped out to an early lead and were able to hold on to win the set 15-9 and the match 3-2, handing the Lady Cats another tough loss.

Harlem was led in the contest by junior Chloe Messerly who powered home 11 of Harlem’s 35 Kills. Junior Vanise Little added six Kills to the Lady Cat attack. Senior Brooke Reed and junior Taya Trottier each recorded five Kills in the match. Reed added 10 assists as well.

Harlem’s scheduled match Saturday versus Glasgow was postponed. The Lady Cats were in Conrad this Tuesday to take on the Cowgirls, results will be in next weeks paper.
