Turner freshman Cassidy Grabofsky attacks the 'Beeter defense Saturday night in Chinook.

The Hays Lodge Pole Thunderbirds have competed very well this season and looked to continue that strong play following the holiday break. Friday night the girls hosted the Turner Tornadoes in the first game of the new year. The Thunderbirds started fast and coasted to a 58-44 win over the Tornadoes. Saturday the Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks paid a visit to the Thunderdome and left in defeat following a 64-35 loss to the Thunderbirds.

Senior Jaedyn Chandler started the new year on fire, blistering the nest for 11 first quarter points Friday night against the Tornadoes. Sophomore Alliya Pretty Paint added six of her own to power the Thunderbirds to a 21-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Junior Dakota Krass did her part to keep the Tornadoes close, scoring seven first half points including a long triple. Chandler though kept up the attack, scoring six more before the half in guiding the Thunderbirds to a 32-15 halftime advantage.

Turner did their best to stay within reach after the break. Freshman Cassidy Grabofsky connected from distance, Krass added another triple but they would still lose ground to the Thunderbirds. Hays/Lodge Pole used a balanced third quarter attack to take a 48-26 lead into the fourth quarter.

Krass scored seven in the fourth and the Tornadoes put up 18 in the quarter but it wasn't enough to dent the Thunderbird lead. Hays/Lodge Pole secured a 58-44 win over the Tornadoes.

Chandler led the Thunderbirds with 23 points on the night while Pretty Paint added 10. Krass led the Tornado attack with 17 points on the night.

Saturday the Thunderbirds looked to get off to another quick start against the Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks. Chandler again had the hot hand for the Thunderbirds, scoring nine first quarter points to power the home team to a 15-6 lead after eight minutes of action.

Hays/Lodge Pole sophomore Alliya Pretty Paint glides in for two of her 13 points in Saturdays win over the Hawks.

The Thunderbirds were very composed in their attack Saturday against the Hawks. No big scoring runs were needed, just a steady offensive attack that saw the lead grow with each passing minute.

Seven players scored in a 16 point second quarter for the Thunderbirds that pushed the lead to 31-15 by intermission.

Hays/Lodge Pole continued their methodical attack during the second half outscoring the Hawks 12-11 in the third to lead 44-25 with eight minutes remaining in the contest.

Pretty Paint added a couple of daggers from beyond the arc down the stretch and the Thunderbirds scored 21 fourth quarter points to cruise to a 64-35 win over the Hawks.

Chandler led the Thunderbirds in scoring with 16 while Pretty Paint added 13. Junior Nashone Shambo added nine points to the Thunderbird effort in the win.
