Wildcats Blast No. 1 Seed Malta 97-74, Take Down Box Elder 96-85, Glasgow 88-64

Harlem junior Caleb Cole slams home two points during third quarter action in Malta last Monday night. The Wildcats handed the Mustangs their first conference loss of the season, dominating start to finish in a 97-74 road win.

The Harlem Wildcats are on a roll heading into the post season. After an up and down season that saw a bit of everything from the Wildcats the boys strung together three quality wins down the stretch.

Monday the Wildcats were in Malta for a game rescheduled do to Covid. The Mustangs entered the game with a perfect 7-0 conference mark but left with a resounding 97-74 defeat at the hands of the Wildcats.

Thursday Harlem took on the Box Elder Bears in another high flying, high scoring classic and were again victorious. The Wildcats outran the Bears in a 96-85 shootout that entertained everyone in the gym.

Friday the team honored its seniors for their contributions to the program and then delivered a resounding 88-64 thumping of the Glasgow Scotties to conclude the regular season.

Monday in Malta the Wildcats were as good defensively as they were offensively. Senior Daniel Lawrence was money from deep, knocking down three triples in the first eight minutes of action. Senior Tegan LeValdo dropped in a long ball as well and scored 10 in the first quarter for the Wildcats.

The Mustangs struggled mightily against the Wildcats relentless defensive effort, managing just eight first quarter points. Harlem ended the first quarter with a 23-8 advantage.

The Mustangs showed why they were undefeated in conference play during the second quarter. After being stymied early the Mustangs tossed 35 second quarter points to rally back and lead 43-41 at the half.

As crazy as a turnabout the first half ending was, the start of the second half was just the same. The Wildcats, having lost all the momentum heading into the break started the third quarter as if nothing happened.

The Harlem defense again was able to contain the Mustang attack, limiting the home team to just eight third quarter points. Lawrence added his fifth and sixth triples of the contest in the quarter. The Wildcats scored 27 points and led 68-51 entering the fourth quarter.

Lawrence connected once again from distance and senior RJ Ramone scored nine down the stretch as Harlem secured an impressive 97-74 win over the Mustangs.

Lawrence led the Wildcats with 27 points including seven from distance. Senior Tyler Cichosz added 18 and Ramone finished with 17.

Thursday the Wildcats and the District 9C Box Elder Bears entertained the fans with a fast paced non conference affair.

The tone was set early on as Box Elder held a 37-33 lead at the end of the first quarter and 48-47 by intermission. The second half belonged to the Wildcats as they secured a 96-85 win. Junior Caleb Cole led the way with 25 points in the win. Ramone added 20 and Cichosz 19.

In the season finale the Scotties were guests to the Jungle and again the Wildcats were looking to play some fast paced up tempo basketball.

Harlem held a 15-14 advantage a the end of the first quarter and 25-23 by halftime in a rather low scoring contest by their standards. The second half belonged to the home team with Harlem outscoring Glasgow 46-41 to earn a 71-64 win. LeValdo led the way with 20 points while Ramone scored 18.

The Wildcats will now head to the District 2B Tournament in Glasgow this Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Harlem will be the No. 3 Seed and take a 5-6 conference record and 10-7 overall record into the tournament.

The Wildcats will begin play Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. against the No. 2 Seed Wolf Point Wolves. The top four teams at the District 2B will advance to the Northern B Divisional the following week.
