Lady Cats Take Down Rocky Boy, Poplar, Fall to Cut Bank

Lady Cat senior Jessica King digs up a ball against the Cut Bank Wolves this past Thursday. Harlem had a good week on the court going 2-1.

The Harlem Lady Cats took the court this week three times. Tuesday they were in Rocky Boy where they defeated the Morning Stars 3-1. Friday the Lady Cats were back in the Jungle playing in front of their hometown fans as they took on the District 1B Cut Bank Wolves. Harlem played well, but in the end, it was the Wolves that pulled out a 3-1 win. Saturday the Lady Cats welcomed the Poplar Indians to town in a clash between District 2B foes. Harlem took down the Indians in straight sets.

The Harlem Lady Cats were in Rocky Boy this past Tuesday night as they looked to top their District 2B Rivals. The Lady Cats fell behind early but evened the set 9-9, following an Ace from senior Jessica King. Moments later Ma'Lia Rider kept the match even at 10-10 with a nice block at the net. The Lady Cats went on to take a 19-17 lead falling another Ace by King. The Morning Stars bounced back after a time out and evened the score at 20-20. Harlem was never able to rebound and although they tied the set again at 22-22 Rocky boy took the opener 25-22

In set number two Harlem jumped out to an 11-8 lead and extended it after a little dump from King to go along with another Ace. Billmayer scored off a free ball to make the score 14-10 in favor of the Lady Cats. Moments later a big slam from Rider extended the Harlem advantage to 16 10.

Rocky boy again responded, storming back to a within a single point, 16-15 leading to a Lady Cat time out. Harlem responded coming out of the time out with Moore scoring off a huge play at the net for a 19-16 Harlem advantage. Once again, the Morning Stars put on a little rally and ended up taking a 23-21 lead before Harlem closed out the set with four straight points. Billmayer had a Kill, King set junior Kaitlyn Johnson in the middle for another point and an Ace from sophomore Aaraya Mount secured the set win 25-22 to even the match 1-1.

The Lady Cats found themselves behind for the first part of set number three, trailing 7-11 and 9-12 before a Kill from Rider seemed to swing momentum back in their favor. Billmayer served up another Ace to keep the momentum turning. Rider scored on back to back Aces as Harlem opened up a 19-14 lead. King scored moments later and a free ball that found a hole for a 22-15 lead. Sophomore Raelynne Briere back set King for a Kill and a 25-17 third set win.

Harlem kept their foot on the gas pedal to start set number four as they looked to close out the Morning Stars. Mount started the set with a pair of Aces and Moore followed with two big points at the net to give Harlem a 14-4 advantage. The Lady Cats never looked back scoring the final point of the match off a King set to Johnson that just fell over the nest for a 25-11 fourth set win for the Lady Cats. Harlem won the match 3-1.

Friday against the Cut Bank Wolves Harlem was looking to build on the momentum built up from their match with the Morning Stars. The Lady Cats played well throughout the match making the visitors earn every point they scored. Rider gave the Lady Cats a lead 26-25 with a big swing but Cut Bank eked out a 28-26 set win.

Set number two was another battle between two evenly matched teams. Rider scored off an Ace and King followed with a Kill for a 18-16 lead. Johnson found a spot for a point King stuffed the Wolves attack to secure a 25-21 Harlem win to even the match at 1-1. Cut Bank took back control in set number three posting a 25-21 win and finished the match with a 25-12 fourth set win to defeat Harlem 3-2.

Lady Cat senior Ma'Lea Moore slams home a Kill against the Cut Bank Wolves Thursday night.

Saturday the Lady Cats were back in the gym for a contest with the Poplar Indians. Harlem led 5-0 right out of the gate after a big swing from Rider. The Lady Cats struggled to keep the lead though as Poplar battle back to even the match at 11-11. Briere made a nice cross court set to King for a 19-16 advantage. The Lady Cats got an Ace from Mount for a 23-21 lead and closed out the opening set with a Kill from Johnson for a 25-21 set win.

Set number two was another stiff test for the Lady Cats and again came down to some big points being won down the stretch. A Kill from Billmayer just grazed the fingertips of the blocker at the net to tie the set at 21-21. Johnson slammed home a corner Kill to again knot the score, this time at 23-23. King ended the set with an Ace for a 25-23 win.

Set number three was all Lady Cats jumped out to a 10-2 advantage and never looked back. Briere scored with a swift one handed touch for a 24-16 lead, A hitting error by the Indians ended the set giving Harlem a 25-16 third set win to complete the sweep.

Harlem will be on the road this week to take on Conrad Thursday, Glasgow on Saturday and Malt next Tuesday.
