Blaine County Library

May 10, 2023

Thank you to everyone who stopped in and helped us celebrate National Library Week! Congratulations to Zyon Silva, Royce Strobe, and Kelsie Harwood. They were the winners of our drawings.

We have three non-fiction books available for checkout. “I Swear: Politics is Messier Than My Minivan” by Katie Porter is a witty, down-to-earth exploration of what it’s really like to serve in Congress, particularly as a single mom. Katie offers Americans a clear picture of what their elected leaders are doing—and how they’re doing it—exposing the gaps between politicians’ press conferences and real people’s lives. “The Angel Makers: Arsenic, a Midwife, and Modern History’s Most Astonishing Murder Ring” by Patti McCracken is a true-crime story like no other. It’s the story of a 1920s midwife who may have been the century’s most prolific killer leading a murder ring of women responsible for the deaths of at least 160 men. For more than a decade, thousands of people have sought advice from Dear Sugar—the pseudonym of bestselling author Cheryl Strayed—first through her online column at The Rumpus, later through her hit podcast, Dear Sugars, and now through her popular Substack newsletter. “Tiny Beautiful Things” collects the best of Dear Sugar in one volume, bringing her wisdom to many more readers. This was a Reese’s Book Club selection.

Another Reese’s Book Club selection available this week is “The House in the Pines” by Ana Reyes. Armed with only hazy memories, a woman who long ago witnessed her friend’s sudden, mysterious death, and has since spent her life trying to forget, sets out to track down answers. What she uncovers, deep in the woods, is hardly to be believed. “Where Coyotes Howl” by Sandra Dallas is a vivid and deeply affecting ode to the early twentieth century West. “Homecoming” by Kate Morton is a sweeping novel that begins with a shocking crime, the effects of which echo across continents and generations.

Regular programs have concluded for the school year. We will be doing school visits this week and next week. Then we will be preparing for the Summer Reading Program. Parents be on the lookout for a neon green paper with the schedule for our Summer Reading Program. We’ll have more information on that next week.

We are excited to welcome Emily Scofield to our team, just in time to start the Summer Reading Program! Emily will be the new Assistant Librarian. She will be taking over the programing at the library and she has lots of great ideas, so be on the lookout for new things.
