This map emerged from a partnership between American Prairie and Aaniiih Consulting, LLC, and features Aaniiih place-names across the region where American Prairie operates. 'fhe Aaniiih, or Gros Ventre, people's traditional homelands extend ,veil beyond this area, and numerous other tribes, including the Nakoda, Olackfeet, Crow, Cree, and Metis, also have names for this region that embody a deep sense of place, knowledge, and connection. ·rhis is one of many layers on a rich and complex landscape. Learning and honoring Indigenous names can ,vake us up to new - as well as ancient - perspectives on the land and its inhabitants. Such names hold deep stories of ceremony, history, ecology, and more. l'hey call up ancient ways of knowing, being, and interacting. 'fhere is so much more to learn, and we encourage you to ask, listen, and bring your good heart and open mind to getting to know the prairie and its people.
American Prairie is pleased to host "A Sense of Place: Exploring the Place Names of 'Ɔ́'ɔ́ɔ́ɔ́niinénn ɔh in Central-Montana" on Thursday, February 26, at 7 pm. This informative presentation by esteemed Aaniiih tribal member and educator Terry Brockie will be held at the National Discovery Center, located at 302 W Main Street in Lewistown, Montana.
