Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read, Sept. 24 – 30, 2017 By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship. The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted with removal or restrictions in libraries and schools. While books have been and continue to be banned, part of the Banned Books Week celebration is the fact that, in a majority of cases, the books have remained available. This happens only thanks to the e...

August is a good month to take a vacation in Glacier National Park. While there plan to stay for several nights in the Lake McDonald valley on the west side of the Park. While east side campgrounds can be very hot, the Lake McDonald campgrounds are very cool. Two are larger camping units. They are Apgar and Fish Creek. Fish Creek is right on the Lake and Apgar is close to Apgar village. I believe that one or both of these campgrounds have installed a reservation system. You can see for yourself by going to Glacier’s home page and scrolling to r...

Reporter's note: Like most readers, I seldom have taken time to visit the sites connected to the Missouri River in and around Great Falls. A trip to the Electric City usually is hurried with rushing to make an appointment or meeting, then another dash to run a few errands in the city and, finally, head for home. Recently my wife and I spent a couple of days in Great Falls. During our stay, and particularly after the medical appointments were completed, we forced ourselves to take some time to se...

At 935 Missouri Street, you will find the Yard of the Week. Paul Ramberg works very hard at maintaining the neat yard all around his house. He has a great garden on the northside which include marigolds and corn flowers around the driveway. In front of the house, is a very colorful mixture of roses, petunias and all to enjoy....
How about another recipe for potato salad? And this recipe turns into a really good recipe for potatoes and tomatoes with steak. You need to grill these vegetables on the barbeque so get yourself a grill basket to grill without the vegetables falling through the barbeque grates. You will need maybe two cups of new potatoes, a banana pepper, some of this year’s crop of very small tomatoes and some onions from this year’s crop as well. For the sauce for the potato salad you will need a quarter cup of a raspberry and vinegar salad dressing, a quar...

The lovely yard of Doris Hofeldt is like a perfect carpet with colorful and graceful perennials and annuals taking turns at their prime bloom times. Doris has widened and redesigned her sidewalks east and west and has placed a white vinyl fence on the north edge of her new sidewalk. The wall has cute plumber's block planters with succulents in them. A large pineapple plant is currently blooming yellow-orange on the east side of her house. She recently had a massive bed of pink Asiatie lilies...

Reporter's note: Late June my wife and I drove to Washington state for our twin grandkids' high school graduation. We stayed with friends who live in Warm Beach, a residential community north of Seattle along Port Susan. Port Susan is a bay connecting, eventually, to Puget Sound and the Pacific Ocean. Warm Beach was a great area to walk, especially in the early summer, with lots of giant evergreens, blooming flowers of every sort, spectacular views of the bay and some challenging hills to get...

Reporter's note: Readers would have to be totally oblivious to their surroundings on Highway 2 this time of year not to notice a number of people on bicycles loaded with camping and travel gear. Most are heading east along a route that takes riders through this part of the upper Midwest-often called the "northern tier route." It's not unusual, in these summer months, to see a couple of cyclists eating ice cream outside a local shop, buying groceries or other items at the store or quick stop and...

Pre-K kids had their week of fun at the Turner School Old Gym and were bused back and forth to the church via school bus. It was there that they joined the other students in singing and games. The school lasted all morning dismissing at noon each day. Those...
