For Immediate Release With Montana’s bow hunting and upland game bird seasons opening Sept. 1, remember that slow moving, quiet or game-calling, scented and camouflaged hunters will soon be sharing the landscape with the state’s even stealthier bears that may be stalking similar prey. It may not be an encounter one hopes for, but all hunters must be aware there is that potential. Grizzly bears are found throughout the western half of Montana, not just the Rocky Mountain Front, Bob Marshall Wilderness complex and the Yellowstone ecosystem. The...

Although most hunters respect the land, property, and wildlife they are hunting, many others do not. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks would like to remind hunters and all outdoor enthusiasts to be good stewards of the land, and respect both private and public property. The FWP Region 6 Citizens Advisory Committee, recognizing that this is an ongoing issue, raised the need for more public outreach. Every hunting season, there are reports of vandalizing of Block Management Area (BMA) boxes,...

Long term the books were often misplaced or lost. Smartphone users typically have their phone...

Last week Joe Kennedy volunteered to tear down the old "wooden bridge" playground equipment at Sweet Park. Kennedy said, "The Park Board wanted it removed and I volunteered to take it down." Joe added, "I started about 2pm taking it apart and hope to be done by dark." Kennedy was not sure when the equipment was installed at the park. Long time Lions Club member Jack Mattingly said he recalled that the wooden bridge play set and the taller, 'curly' slide beside the bridge were both installed by...

By Darin Hannum, Chinook school superintendent As Chinook Public Schools gears up for the 2018-19 school year, there are several topics I would like to address with everyone: enrollment numbers and fall activities, new activity bus, weight room, and out of district students. Enrollment and Fall Activities We have had an excellent start to the school year. Chinook High School enrollment is 115 students, Chinook Junior High has 53, and Meadowlark Elementary has roughly 200 students. With the numbers at the elementary we have several classes that...

Reporter's note: I've been writing about places my wife and I found interesting in our travels. We've made numerous trips to the Seattle area to visit our daughter and her family. Usually those trips are a mad dash to get there (800 miles and 14 hours straight driving), then a made dash to get back to Chinook. The last couple of trips we've spent some time exploring eastern Washington-that area of the Evergreen State that runs from east of the Cascade Range to the Idaho border. Unlike the west...
