FFA has been one busy club this month, and will continue to be busy up until Spring. Results from Lewistown Mechanics, held on January 28th, included Austin Swanson receiving 18th place, and Patrick McMaster receiving 20th place overall individually for the Junior Mechanics. The junior mechanics team, Patrick McMaster, Austin Swanson, and Jackson Schmele (first timer), went home with an 8th place finish. The regional 2017 American Cancer Society's (ACS) Relay for Life will be held on Friday, June 23 at the track at Havre High School. This year's event, renamed the North Central Montana Relay for Life, will be the first under a new collaborative effort between Blaine and Hill counties. A number of reasons led to the combining of the Blaine and Hill County relays and organizers are hoping for a new synergy from the combined efforts. Harlem Elementary's Disney Showcase kicked off Wednesday afternoon (January 25th), with a concert performed with the 4th grade class singing all of the Disney movie favorites for their families, friends, and school mates. Thanks to the generosity of the Montana Masonic Foundation and Chinook's Masonic Lodge #50, band and choir students at Chinook High will soon receive new music folders to be used during performances. CHS music teacher Levi Williams, also a Mason, wrote the successful grant application that resulted in the $1000 grant award from the Montana Foundation. These unusual ice 'sculptures' were photographed just below the weir (open water in the background) at the Chinook Water Treatment plant. Workers at the plant explained the unusual formations result when water coming over the weir is forced up through cracks in the ice, refreezes and builds up. A scholarship is again offered by the North Central Montana Cattle Women and the North Central Montana Stock Growers. This annual scholarship is available to high school seniors and college students completing their sophomore year. Interest from a memorial fund honoring the memory of deceased members is contributed to by the Cattle Women. Chinook High School is putting on a fundraiser, for science teacher Ms. Wood and study Hall advisor Ms. Olson. The students chose five staff members for the community to vote on by putting money in a designated jar. Voting runs from February 1st to February 27th. The Mountain River Indian Relay team, from Fort Belknap reservation, earned a place in the 2016 All Nations Indian Relay Championship held last September at MetroPark in Billings. The Blaine County Sheriff’s Office has scheduled a Concealed Weapons Permit “Legal Review” class for Wednesday, February 8 at the Turner Lions Building. The class will run from 6pm to 8pm and is a prerequisite to obtain a Concealed Weapons Permit in Blaine County. The training is part of the new process for obtaining a permit that went into effect on July 1 of last year.
