Bear Paw Meanderings

November 23, 2016

Keith Hanson, owner of “The Blaine County Journal” says he figures I have been working as a writer for them for the last seventeen years. That would mean that this is my seventeenth Thanksgiving column for this good newspaper.

You might think I don’t have much left to say but I do. First of all, Hurrah for the Turkey!

You see, gentle readers, I have always loved turkey. It was the one meal that I was so very happy to learn how to cook myself. I know others feel the same way. In the grocery store last week a guy helping me out with my groceries said this was his favorite month because of the turkey. I have a dear relative who says the same thing, No presents, nothing to worry about but preparing and eating a truly great meal.

I sort of feel that way too. Always have. That is why if I am fortunate enough to get invited out for Thanksgiving dinner, I always have a cooked turkey at home. For it is the leftovers, the turkey sandwiches, plain or Dagwood style, the leftover gravy and dressing. It is all simply wonderful!

This year I am going to make a vat of mashed potatoes and sometime after Thanksgiving make a Christmas Shepherd’s Pie. Traditionally it is made with lamb or hamburger, lots of vegetables and a little tomato sauce all smothered with mashed potatoes. I think that mine is going to have turkey, gravy, dressing and green bean casserole in it and be smothered in my extra mashed potatoes and I bet it will be wonderful. Funny I never thought of that before.

And, with those leftovers there are plenty of recipes floating around for Mexican tamale pie which is a wonderful dish too.

But, I digress.

Best of all, for Thanksgiving is really not the food at all. It is getting together for another year with family and friends and giving thanks for all that we have, all that we are and all that we can be for the coming year.

It is the American holiday that is not just about us but really about all of us together. The food just brings us altogether.

So, from me and mine to you and yours, may this be the very best Thanksgiving ever!
