MSU-Nothern, Chinook Alum recognized for volunteer work

Chinook Sugarbeeter Alum and current MSU-Northern Skylight Basketball player Makhayla Farmer with her Athletes in Action Service award that she was presented with by Governor Steve Bullock at halftime of the Cat/Griz game in Missoula, Saturday.

Montana State University-Northern athlete Makhayla Farmer is being honored this weekend during a game in a different sport for her work off of the basketball court.

Farmer is one of 12 athletes Gov. Steve Bullock and Montana Campus Compact board members will honor for volunteer work during Saturday's Brawl of the Wild football game in Missoula between University of Montana and Montana State University.

"Makhayla Farmer is extremely active in community service in both Havre and Chinook," Northern Women's Basketball Coach Chris Mouat said. "She is the first one to step forward when a volunteer is needed. She is from a small town (Chinook) and she understands the value of giving her time to help others."

The work for which Farmer, a junior in elementary education, is being honored includes volunteering at Havre Food Bank, Bear Paw Credit Union Kids Day in the Park, Havre Pride trash collection, Beaver Creek Park Dash, MSU-Northern Alumni Foundation Chinese Auction and orienteering with kids in the Bear Paw Mountains.

Montana Campus Compact is a 17-campus higher education network that advances the public purposes of colleges and universities by deepening their ability to improve community life and educate students for civic and social responsibility

"College students in Montana do amazing community work, and their investment of time, talent and energy help improve our communities across the state. Campus Compact's Montana Athletes In Service Award honors the contributions of student athletes and volunteers," Josh Vanek of MTCC said.

The other athletes being honored in Missoula are: Sonica Archdale, Fort Peck Community College, sophomore in general studies. Sport: Basketball; Burke Burgess, Rocky Mountain College, senior in elementary education. Sport: Football; Will Davey, Montana Tech, junior in business information technology. Sport: Football; Termaine Edmo, Blackfeet Community College, sophomore in addiction studies. Sport: Basketball; Chase Farrell, Carroll College, senior in business administration. Sport: Golf; Lauren Hausauer, Montana State University, senior in elementary education. Sport: Golf; Sara Hilbert, Dawson Community College, sophomore in general studies. Sport: Basketball; Allie Keleti, University of Montana, senior in communications studies. Sport: Track and Field; Kiera Lake, Flathead Valley Community College, sophomore in agriculture. Sport: Logger Sports; Dana Lubieniecki, Montana State University Billings, senior in health-human performance. Sport: Soccer.; Tess Turk, University of Montan Western, senior in natural horsemanship-business administration. Sport: Rodeo.
