Harlem, Turner advance to Northern B, Northern C Divisional Tournament

February 21, 2018

Turner advances to the Northern C for the first time since 1997. Harlem returns to Northern B March 1-3.

The Turner Tornadoes and Harlem Wildcats will continue their season at the Northern C and Northern B Divisional Tournaments. Turner will open play Wednesday (Today) at the Northern C Divisional in Great Falls with a 5:30 tipoff against the Heart Butte Warriors. Harlem will open play at the Northern B Divisional in Cut Bank, March 1 against the Fairfield Eagles at 2:30 p.m.

In the consolation final the Tornadoes and the Chester/Joplin Inverness Hawks met with a trip to the Northern C Divisional on the line.

The Hawks opened up with an 11-7 lead after the first quarter but Turner was able to trim three points by halftime and trailed just 20-19 at the break.

Chester/J-I scored four points to start the third but junior Raegan Conlan converted an old fashioned three point play and sophomore Sarah Billmayer added a bucket to cut the lead to one 25-24. Freshman Shyan Krass gave Turner its first lead 26-25, of the second half with a nice left handed shot at the 1:57 mark of the third quarter.

Krass added another bucket moments later and suddenly Turner was up three 28-25. Chester/J-I reclaimed the lead early in the fourth quarter and on back to back possessions Billmayer would even the game with score of her own at 30-30 and 32-32.

Billmayer then gave the Tornadoes the lead for good by knocking down a pair from the charity stripe. Krass added a jumper from the elbow and Turner held a 36-32 lead with 1:45 remaining.

The Hawks certainly weren't going away and after knocking down a triple to cut the lead to 36-35 the intensity level in the gym skyrocketed. Chester/J-I found themselves at the line for two free throws with :02.2 showing on the clock but were unable to convert and after an errant shot at the buzzer fell short Turner had advanced to the Northern C with a 36-35 win.

Billmayer led the Tornadoes with 17 points, Krass added 12 points and 10 rebounds in the win

"CJI was an extreme battle. It went back and forth the entire game which kept it super exciting, maybe a little too exciting, but that's what it's all about, consolation final basketball," said Head Coach Jen Baird. "We dodged a few bullets at the end off the game. But it was hard fought throughout and the girls kept digging deep and were able to hold off CJI."

Saturday morning the Turner Tornadoes and North Star Knights met with each team looking to continue their season.

Junior Raegan Conlan came out firing from long range and canned her first three attempts from long range and followed that with a hard take to the paint were she was fouled, she then converted a free throw and accounted for Turners first 10 points helping the team get off to a fast start with a 10-2 lead early.

Turner led 15-6 at the end of one and never relinquished the lead. The teams basically traded baskets the rest of the way as Turner maintained control of the contest throughout leading to a 53-46 win that sent the Tornadoes into the consolation final and putting themselves in control of their own destiny.

"We knew Saturday was going to be a big day. We would have to beat two teams that we split games with over the regular season," stated Baird.

The day couldn't have started any better for her team, "Raegan (Conlan) got us started with three big three pointers in the first three minutes of the game. That momentum carried us through the rest of the game, I don't think North Star ever lead," added Baird. "They would never go away though, they made us battle the whole game and it came down to making our free throws at the end to hold them off.

Turner began the tournament with a 51-32 win over the Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds Thursday afternoon. Sophomore Sarah Billmayer scored 21 points and freshman Shyan Krass added eight points and 10 rebounds.

In the semifinal contest Turned took on the Fort Benton Longhorns and matched their effort for much of the contest before falling 64-42. Krass scored 14 points and Billmayer accounted for 13.

As for the Tornadoes making their first appearance at the Northern C Divisional in quit some time Baird has things in perspective, "We're looking at uncharted territory, having been about 21 years since Turner girls reached the divisional tournament. We're just wanting to take it one game at a time and enjoy the experience. Some goals are certainly to go in and surprise some teams. By the end of Divisionals, the goal certainly is to make it to the State Tournament. But the only way to do that is to take it one game at a time, stay sharp and play good, fundamental basketball."

The Harlem Wildcats were already assured of a trip to the Northern B Divisional entering the District 2B tournament in Wolf Point based on their performance during the regular season.

The Lady Cats fell in their opener against the Wolf Point Wolves 48-38. The Wolves would defeat the Poplar Indians to win the District 2B crown.

The Lady Cats were led in the contest by senior Mystic Striker and junior Skylee Dirden with 10 points each.

Harlem then took on the Malta M-ettes and raced past them for a third time earning a 65-42 win.

Striker again led the team as she connected on 11-16 shots from the field and scored a game high 27 points while also grabbing 11 rebounds and recording five steals.

Junior L'Tia Lawrence connected on five bombs from beyond the arc and scored 23 points in the win. Harlem (16-4) will have an extra week to prepare for the Northern B Divisional to be played in Cut Bank March 1-3.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters and Hays/Lodge Pole seasons ended at the District 9C Tournament but both teams played hard to the end each time they stepped on the court.

The Sugarbeeters fell to the Fort Benton Longhorns 70-25 in the opener and the Thunderbirds were bested by the Tornadoes 51-32 setting up a third meeting between the two teams in loser out action Friday morning.

The Thunderbirds won the first two contest in games that came down to the wire. Friday mornings game was another thriller but this time the Sugarbeeters pulled out a 46-45 win after senior Sierra Swank scored in the final seconds to put Chinook on top.

Junior Megan Molyneaux hit three from downtown and scored 11 points in the win. Swank added 11 points and 11 rebounds to help secure the win. Freshman Ella Messerly led the Thunderbirds with 18 points and sophomore Mulleeah Stiffarm corralled 14 rebounds and score 13 points in game.

The Turner Tornadoes will surely represent the District 9C well this week at the Northern C Divisional and we will have full coverage and interviews from their experience in next weeks edition. Good luck Turner!
