All four Blaine County Teams in Action at Glasgow Invitational Track and Field Meet

April 7, 2021

action this week at the Glasgow Invitational on Thursday. The Sugarbeeters and Wildcats were in Cut Bank to start the season with a limited number of athletes due to practice requirements.

This week the Sugarbeeter and Wildcats were closer to full strength and were joined in Glasgow by the Turner Tornadoes and the Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds as they made their season debuts.

The Track and field season in Montana is always contentious. The season isn’t very long, the weather is always unpredictable and it can be hard to get meets in year to year.

The Glasgow Invitational featured 600 student athletes competing for nearly 30 schools with teams from the Class A, Class B and Class C on hand providing top notch competition for the athletes early in the season.

Chinook junior Toby Niederegger had an outstanding day in Glasgow, automatically qualifying for the Class C State Track and Field Meet in Missoula in the High Jump. Niederegger cleared 6’2” to win the event and clear the qualifying mark by two inches.

Niederegger also placed fifth in the 100 Meter Dash, crossing the finish line in :12.70. The Chinook 4x100 Meter Relay of Niederegger, Tyler Schoen, Braxton Inman and Levi Jensen earned a sixth place finish as did the 4x400 Meter Relay (Jensen, Schoen, Inman and Lane Hasler).

Harlem junior Darrius Longknife earned a third place finish in the 300 Meter High Hurdles (:48.27). Chinook sophomore Braxton Inman was fourth with a time of :48.70.

The Wildcats picked up another third place finish in the Triple Jump as junior Amari Stanley hopped, skipped and jumped his way to a mark of 38’9”. Harlem senior Andrew Rasmussen was fourth with a mark of 37’9”. Harlem junior Daniel Lawrence crossed the finish line in the 100 Meter Hurdles in :19.30 to earn a fifth place finish.

On the girls side of the ledger it was Chinook freshman Hallie Neibauer who turned in the performance of the week. Neibauer placed fourth in the 400 Meter Dash with a lap of 1:05.40. She then added a fifth place finish in the 200 Meter Dash with a sprint of :29.53.

Turner senior Shyan Krass earned a fourth place finish in the Discus with a flip of 96’4” in her first outing of the season. Chinook junior Kinley Hamilton had another strong showing in the field with a sixth place finish in the Shot Put with a mark of 32’9”.

In the middle distance races it was Chinook sophomore Anna Terry with a fine effort. Terry turned in a two lap time of 2:42.68 to finish sixth in the 800 Meter Run. Terry also added a fifth place finish in the 1,600 Meter Run with a four lap time of 6:04.64.

In the hurdles it was Harlem freshman Kaitlyn Johnson with another strong showing. Johnson finished sixth on the 300 Meter High Hurdles with a time of :53.60.

In such a big meet it’s hard to crack the top six and score points for your team and a top 10 finish is pretty darn good. Chinook sophomore Tyler Schoen was seventh in the 100 Meter Dash (:12.75). Niederegger was seventh in the 200 Meter Dash (:25.45). Harlem’s Darrius Longknife was ninth in the 110 Meter Hurdles (:21.18). Stanley was tenth in the Long Jump for the Wildcats as well (17’1.5”).

Krass was eighth in the 800 Meter Run for the Tornadoes (2:43.65). Senior Chloe Messerly was tenth in the Shot Put for Harlem (29’8”). Johnson earned a seventh place in the Javelin for the Lady Cats as well (83’00”).

Glasgow was a good test for the teams to gage where they were amongst some of the best in the state. Local track and field teams were looking to get another test today at the prestigious Cal Wearley Meet in Havre but unfortunately as of press time the event has been postponed. In addition the likelihood of finding an alternate date appears very slim at this point in the season. If anything, the past twelve months have taught student athletes and coaches how to adjust on the fly and they will certainly make the best of this situation as well. The Havre Lions Invitational scheduled for Saturday is still set to take place.
