The Chinook High School Sugarbeeter 2021 Tennis Team.

The Chinook Sugarbeeter Tennis Team has battled through the less desirable weather we have all experienced so far to start the season. However, they have not let that hold them back and despite the obstacles, this young team has improved immensely early on.

The Sugarbeeters are led by Head Coach Janelle Deanon this spring. This years squad includes seniors Jade Cecrle, and Lily Surber will take over as team Manager. Surber has been a strong contributor to the team in the past but do to an ACL injury suffered during the basketball season she is unable to compete this year.

Juniors out this spring are Allison Powell, Tylie Richman and Stacie Liddle. Sophomores include Lexi Pitkanen and Torin Cecrle. Out for their first time are freshman Mya Berreth, Jenna Liddle and Tasha Skoyen.

"It's been a great season so far this year, despite the less than ideal weather," said Deanon. "The girls who are new, or who are returning from last year, who are basically new, have picked it up extremely quickly. All the girls have won some matches, and lost some tough ones, but they're learning everyday."

While the weather hasn't been the best the team has performed well and Deanon is excited about whats to come, "As we enter this home stretch of the season I just want to see some continued growth from the girls. I've seen them learn to love this sport that is a lifelong game, and they've bonded as a team as well. Hopefully we'll have girls that qualify for state which is always exciting to see!"

This past weekend the Chinook Sugarbeeters hosted their own two day invitational. All of the matches were played in Havre at the Bill Voughey Tennis Courts. These are the same courts that will host the Northern B/C Tennis Divisional on May 7-8.

The 'Beeters performed very well at the Invitational with all three doubles teams and all three singles players winning at least one match. On Friday in Singles competition freshman Mya Berreth picked up a pair of wins. First she beat Sidney Hawks of Chester/Joplin-Inverness 6-1, later she defeated her opponent from Great Falls Central 5-0. Junior Allison Powell split her two Friday matches, falling to Aaliyah Standiford 6-2 before bouncing back to defeat her opponent from Great Falls Central 7-5.

In Saturday Singles, Berreth completed a perfect 3-0 weekend with a 6-1 win over James RedBoy of Poplar. Powell improved to 3-1 on the weekend with wins over Wolf Point 6-0 and Catherine Bear of Poplar 6-2. Freshman Tasha Skoyen defeated Azeria McIntosh of Chester/Joplin-Inverness on Friday 6-0.
