At the State B/C Speech and Drama Tournament held on January 28-29 at Huntley Project School in Worden, Montana, the Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbird thespians won their first-ever State Speech and Drama trophy. Helping their team to earn Third Place in Class C Drama, Haley Cichosz and Jayla Haakanson captured second in Dramatic Theater.

In addition to sophomores Cichosz and Haakanson, the Thunderbird team is comprised of Riley Werk, senior; Donovan Chandler, sophomore; and Alexia Walls, freshman. As a team, they finished third behind West Yellowstone and Fairview.

"Although Isaiah RunsAbove was an individual Cross Country State Champion in 2018, this is our school's first state team trophy in anything since 2007," reported Head Coach Paul Condon. He and his Assistant Coach Natacha Doney expressed pride in their competitors.

This performance follows their winning first place in the Northern Division, capturing the Class C drama sweepstakes crown.

To take second place in Dramatic Theater at the state tournament, Cichosz and Haakanson performed a cutting from the Susanna Kaysen memoir, Girl, Interrupted. Humorous, honest, and sensitive, the memoir centers on the experience of a teenage girl at a dark time in her life. Set within the shifting landscape of the late sixties, Girl, Interrupted not only documents Kaysen's life but gives lasting and specific dimension to our definitions of sane and insane, mental illness and recovery. At its core, the story suggests that it is normal to feel crazy sometimes.
