The Harlem Lady Cats have had their struggles early on this season, but not for lack of effort. The Lady Cats have been competing and working on coming together. Head Coach Brandon Trottier is keeping them going in practice and working to achieve their goals on the court. This past Monday, December 19 the Lady Cats welcomed the Rocky Boy Northern Starts to the Jungle and finally started to see some of their hard work payoff. Harlem jumped out to a double digit lead early and held on for a 54-47 non-conference win.

The Lady Cats led just 3-2 with more than half the opening quarter gone when junior Emma Billmayer took a nice pass from sophomore Gracie Sanchez in the corner for a long three and a 6-2 Lady Cat lead with 3:42 left on the first quarter clock. Sanchez again found Billmayer open, this time for a deep left elbow three-point bucket to push the Harlem lead to 9-4. Following a Rocky Boy timeout, the Lady cats got a fast break layup from Sanchez that included a little flare to help Harlem secure an 11-6 lead at the start of the second quarter.

The Lady Cats continued to play consistent basketball on both ends of the court in the second quarter. Billmayer drained her third triple of the contest to start the second quarter scoring and push the Lady Cat lead to eight 14-6 with 6:15 left in the half. Sophomore Lacia Wells found a wide open Aaraya Mount underneath to double up the Morning Stars 16-8.

Billmayer returned the favor, making a good pass to Sanchez for her first three-point bucket. Sophomore Raelynne Briere secured the offensive rebound and scored to keep the Lady Cat momentum going. Billmayer added another bucket before the half ended to give Harlem a 23-17 advantage heading into the locker room.

Harlem junior Tova Anderson brings the ball up the court in the earlier this season in a District 2B contest. Anderson does whatever is asked of her each night. Mount, Anderson and the Lady Cats have built some momentum heading into the break following their win over rocky Boy on Monday.

The Stars were able to trim a point off the Lady Cat in the third quarter. Sanchez scored six points in the third quarter, Billmayer added a couple of baskets and Mount scored another for the Lady Cats in the quarter.

Harlem took a 35-30 lead into the fourth quarter and were determined to not let it slip away. Mount had the hot hand for the Lady Cats down the stretch. The sophomore connected from beyond the arc and scored eight points the final quarter to keep the offense rolling. Sanchez added another triple and contributed five more to the Lady Cats total. Wells added a triple of her own with time winding down and scored six in the final frame. In the end the Lady Cats held on and secured their first win of the season 54-47.

Sanchez led the Lady Cats with 16 points in the win, Billmayer added 15 and Mount 10. The Lady Cats will now head into the Holiday break where they will continue to work on their schemes and come out ready to go in 2023 when the welcome the Chinook Sugarbeeters to town on Friday, January 6, 2023. Their game against Cut Bank has been postponed and has not yet been rescheduled.
